Presidential Candidates on Gun Control

nra-logo.gifIn case you missed it, the Miami Herald enumerates major presidential candidates’ stances on the issue of Second Amendment rights (Hat Tip to NRA-ILA). Some of the responses surprised me. Here’s my views on the Second Amendment positions taken by these candidates:

Acceptable:
Barack Obama – perhaps this is the ONLY view Obama has that is acceptable
Bill Richardson – if Democrats are to be accepted in the wild west, they approve of guns
Sam Brownback – consistently agrees with NRA positions
Jim Gilmore – tough on criminals but needs to be a bit tougher
Mike Huckabee – supports concealed-carry and most other sane positions
Duncan Hunter – widely supported by NRA-types
John McCain – a Second Amendment supporter but has other ‘issues’
Ron Paul – consistently agrees with NRA positions
Tom Tancredo – right on guns and border enforcement

No Clear Position:
Mike Gravel – (Who?)
Mitt Romney – seems to mostly be at odds with weapon owners rights
Tommy Thompson – no clear signals of support for owners, but supports penalizing gun violence

Unacceptable:
Joe Biden – blames the gun, it’s makers and does not blame gun-using criminals
Hillary Clinton – historically an enemy of Second Amendment rights
Chris Dodd – incoherently opposes guns or something like that
John Edwards – based on senate record, not on grandstanding VT shootings remarks
Dennis Kucinich – What can a Hobbit know about guns to oppose them altogether?
Rudy Giuliani – falls in lockstep with gun-grabbers

D.C. Gun Grabbers Foiled Again!

Off to the Supreme Court for the Washington D.C. Gun Ban:

A federal appeals court May 8 denied a petition by D.C. officials to reconsider a March ruling that overturned the District`s 30-year-old gun ban. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled 6-4 to deny the District`s request that the entire court review a previous ruling in which a three-judge panel found some of the District`s gun restrictions to be unconstitutional.

What I want to know is Why aren’t D.C. residents allowed to get guns now? Their gun-grabbing law has been declared UNCONSTITUTIONAL! TWICE!

Update: These two articles discuss the next steps for D.C. and the effects on gun owners:

Police Cannot Police Society

badge714.gifSome time ago, our neighbor’s adult children would throw wild parties, attended by scores if not hundreds of people that were noisy, inconsiderate and littered the street with food and drink containers.

When we called the police, they would sometimes respond, but the problem persisted. To make a long story short, we contacted an arbitration service who conducted a meeting between us and the neighbor; after we met and exchanged grievances, the neighbor agreed to stop after I enumerated a long list of incidents and threatened a lawsuit. Basically, we had to do it ourselves.

None of the events above were life-threatening, although some of the young adults made threats against us. We decided to acquire even more home protection than we already had.

The police’s ability to intervene on the behalf of the law-abiding will get worse before it gets better.

Here’s another case of having to do it yourself as told by Mike Adams to a reporter at The Athens (Ohio) News (excerpt):

Spending Sunday Afternoon with the Guns

Our usual thing to do on Sundays is to go to the local shooting range for a little target practice. Today, we took a Smith & Wesson 908 9mm pistol, a S&W .357 magnum revolver and our Remington 12 and 20 gauge shotguns. We enjoy the target practice, but we also enjoy sitting on our backyard swing cleaning the guns afterward. This shot is of the guns laid out on our table as we prepare for cleanup and light oiling.

Update (Cap’n Bob): Check out the video of Damsel’s day at the range.

No Guns for Cho – What Then?

no-guns.jpgKeep in mind that Cho Seung-Hui is the only one responsible for the massacre at Virginia Tech. Nobody else was involved. He was absolutely determined to cause death and pain to those whom he had come to despise, including himself.

So, what would Cho have done if nobody were to have sold him a gun? My thoughts are that he would have gone to the dorm, bludgeoned the woman to death with a legally-purchased hammer or other trauma-inducing “weapon,” and then proceed to engineering classes with a home-made explosive device (again, made with legally purchased materials) and proceed to blow himself and an unknown number of students to kingdom come. After all, the latter method is used almost daily by homicide bombers in the Middle East — why not by Cho as well?

Bolton Tells NRA Beware of Foreign Anti-Gun Interests

john-boltonOver the weekend in Saint Louis at the NRA Convention, former UN Ambassador John Bolton told 3500 banquet attendees that foreign anti-gun interests are intent on depriving Americans of their second-amendment right to own and bear arms. Bolton cited a 2001 UN conference on small arms and light weapons wherein the majority of participants decided that private ownership of weapons should be banned worldwide.

Bolton also said that US proponents of gun control are turning to international interests in their efforts to deny gun ownership. Bolton said the United States’ bottom line is that this country will not agree to anything that infringes on the constitutional right to bear arms.

“Had the NRA not come forward … one could only guess what our State Department bureaucracy would have done,” he said.

The United Nations instead should focus on nuclear threats from Iran and North Korea, he said. Negotiations with these countries are more dangerous than productive, Bolton said.

The United States should not make general contributions to the United Nations, Bolton said. Instead, he said, “We should pay for what we want and expect to get what we pay for.”

Hear, Hear!

Rolling Thunder

Rolling Thunder showed up at the National Mall last Saturday in Washington DC along with Veterans and Patriots at the “Gathering of Eagles.” They were there in a show of patriotic pride as a counter to the anti-war demonstration planned by the far-left. Rolling Thunder is also the organization that protects fallen soldiers’ families and friends when these crazy anti-war people decide to demonstrate at a funeral.

Kudos to the Rolling Thunder.

And speaking of them, I sure do like their Rolling Thunder Special Edition Smith & Wesson .45 caliber ACP Pistol . . .
