Nagin and New Orleans Make D.C. Look Like Mayberry

I am still wondering why this guy isn’t in jail despite having been found in contempt of court and deliberately withholding the firearms of New Orleans’ citizens.

About a year and a half has passed since Mayor Ray Nagin and other City of New Orleans officials illegally stripped legitimate gun owners of their second amendment rights by summarily collecting their guns. Citizens of New Orleans wait in peril for the return of their only means of self-defense – the City doesn’t seem to protect them at all while the murder rate in post-Katrina New Orleans has grown to astronomical proportions!

This statement from Wayne LaPierre at NRANews.com absolutely proves that disarming citizens enhances the ability of criminals to prevail:

No Relief For New Orleans

3/19/2007

The NRA’s been fighting the city of New Orleans for a long time now, trying to get the firearms seized by the city returned to their legal and rightful owners. But every day the city stalls, they’re putting their residents at risk.

The city’s homicide rate is estimated to be an incredible 96 murders per hundred thousand. To put that in perspective, in 2005 the national homicide rate was 5.6 per hundred thousand. New Orleans has done the impossible… it’s made Washington, D.C., look like Mayberry in comparison.

We’re fighting to get the guns back to their lawful owners in New Orleans because it’s the right thing to do. We’re standing up for the Second Amendment, but we’re also standing up for the hundreds of people left defenseless by the city.

Can you imagine living in New Orleans without a firearm for protection? Can you imagine lying in bed at night, hearing the sirens come down your street, knowing that you could be next- and then remembering that the city still hasn’t given your guns back?

We’re fighting for a right, and we’re fighting for freedom, but we’re also fighting a city that prefers its citizens to be helpless against a growing tide of criminal terror.

Make no mistake: We won’t stop until we’ve won.

D.C. Gun Ban Overturned

D.C. Circuit Court Hands Down Significant Victory for Individual Second Amendment Rights!

Friday, March 09, 2007

Fairfax, VA- The District of Columbia Circuit Court today affirmed that the Second Amendment of the Constitution protects an inherent, individual right to bear arms. Today’s ruling should have a positive impact on the current D.C. gun ban, the National Rifle Association is fighting to overcome.

The majority opinion of the court states, “[T]he phrase ‘the right of the people,’ when read intratextually and in light of Supreme Court precedent, leads us to conclude that the right in question is individual.” The majority opinion sums up its holding on this point as follows: The D.C. Circuit Court went further in upholding individual freedoms, rejecting the claim that the Second Amendment does not apply to the District because it is not a State.

The D.C. City Council is expected to appeal the ruling.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this one works it’s way up through the appeal process.

Rapid Fire

Today was a fun day at the shooting range — Damsel is getting really good at emptying the magazine in her 20 gauge Remington 870 in just a couple of seconds. She maintains good accuracy also.

Why Isn’t Nagin in Jail?

Nagin in JailContemptible Ray Nagin, along with ex-Police chief of New Orleans Warren Riley, have been found in contempt of court in Louisiana for failing to provide disclosures to the discovery phase of legal action for illegal confiscation of firearms from legitimate gun owners after Hurricane Katrina. In a ruling by Judge Carl Barbier, the city attorney was ordered to compensate the National Rifle Association’s attorneys “for wasted time and money.”

What I want to know is why aren’t Nagin, Riley and their attorney paying fines for contempt? Why aren’t they being prosecuted for their illegal actions?

The Wait Is Over

Well, it was over last Friday, actually. The new Remington 870 18″ BBL CAP7 Security Gun went with us to the range Sunday. We had a terrific shoot and are very pleased with this gun. Damsel’s youth 870 is still her favorite choice for home defense (it has a shorter stock and she’s petite) but she manages to work the action on this one just fine. Watch closely as she shoots the silhouette man off the hook. Press > to play. You can mute the volume too by clicking on the speaker icon.

The Contemptable Ray Nagin

The Mayor of New Orleans may find himself in contempt of court for his lack of cooperation in the case brought before the federal court that involved the City’s confiscation of firearms from legally-authorized citizens after Hurricane Katrina. Ray Nagin, who is perpetually stuck on stupid, will now at last, (we hope) finally get justice that this dangerously inept pinhead needs. The National Rifle Association‘s attorneys will be back in federal court to file petitions to find the Mayor and Police chief of New Orleans in contempt for failing to produce discovery evidence in the case.

Senate Votes to Preserve Political Free Speech

This is a really good indication that the United States Senate, in spite of the wafer-thin Democratic majority, will protect our First and Second Amendment rights. Here’s to the Congress following suit.

From NRA-ILA:

Bennett – McConnell Amendment Passes! NRA – ILA Grassroots Activism Protected

Fairfax, VA – The U.S. Senate has voted 55-43 to accept an amendment to S.A. 3, the “Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act”, removing a proposal that would have drastically limited the First Amendment rights of Americans in the political process. The Bennett – McConnell Amendment, offered by Sens. Robert Bennett (R-Utah) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), removes Section 220 that would have forced ordinary citizens to register with the federal government as “lobbyists,” with all the attendant restrictions, costs, and penalties.

“The First Amendment protects an unqualified ‘right of the people to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. That is one of the cornerstones of American politics.” said Chris W. Cox, chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA). “ Sec. 220 would have, for the first time in American history, severely regulated and restricted ‘the voluntary efforts of members of the general public to communicate their own views on an issue to Federal officials.’

“On behalf of 4 million NRA members and tens of millions of gun owners, hunters and sportsmen across the country, I want to thank Senators Robert Bennett and Mitch McConnell for their leadership in preserving political free speech for all,” concluded Cox. “We are also grateful to the 55 senators who voted for the Bennett – McConnell Amendment.”
