Under the Harvest Moon

Depending upon where you are in the world, the Harvest Moon will take place on either this Thursday or Friday. The occurrence of the Harvest Moon in October happens about one in four years. The latest a Harvest Moon can occur is October 7th or 8th, depending on your relative position to the date line.

The Harvest Moon gets it’s name because it happens at the beginning of harvesting season in the Northern Hemisphere. Since modern agriculture is not as dependent on the light of the Harvest Moon, it has become a symbol for the beginning of the festive and colorful fall season. Halloween isn’t too far in the future and Thanksgiving Day will be here before you know it.

And speaking of moonlight, did you know that most people cannot perceive color nor can they read by the light of the moon? See NASA’s Strange Moonlight for some interesting information on the Harvest Moon and human eyesight in the moonlight.

Colorful Asian Lilies

On a very busy day for us, I took time out to photograph these beautiful Asian lilies which we have on our table this weekend. They were so pretty, I had to stop and get this shot.

Cellphone Safety Law

We’ve blogged before about “Distracted Drivers” and offered humor in “Top 10 Reasons Why People Use a Wireless While Driving.” Now, Governor Schwarzenegger has signed a law to require the use of hands-free devices except for emergencies. That’s good, but it won’t take effect until next July.

Governor launches cell phone law

The law that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Friday banning motorists in California from holding cell phones while driving does not take effect until July 1, 2008, but the governor is urging drivers to begin complying now.

“You can use a cell phone, but use a headset or use a speaker system and you will be fine,” the governor said during a signing ceremony at a hotel in Oakland.

State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, predicted Senate Bill 1613 — the law he pushed through the Legislature after four unsuccessful attempts — will save lives by decreasing driving distractions.

Under the law, motorists will be required to use a headset, speaker phone, ear bud or other device that frees up both hands when they talk. Motorists who need to make emergency calls are exempted.

Violators will be fined $20 for the first infraction and $50 for subsequent violations.

Anniversary Presents

Well, you already saw my other anniversary presents here and here, so now I would like to show you the one I got today (which is our actual anniversary): a hand-made antique gold and tourmaline bracelet — I love it!

Cap’n Bob’s present won’t be here until next week because of a stupid ten-day waiting period for firearms. More on that later, though.

The Other New Toy

As I alluded to yesterday, Damsel got another new toy. This is a smaller, lighter version of Remmington’s model 870 shotgun that she shot for the first time today.

Update: Video of the first outing to the indoor range. I think she likes it!

Lunch

This is how Damsel’s appetite goes: soup, sandwich and shooter.

She got a new toy this week and just loves it! Actually two new toys – more on that later . . .
