For the term "greenbat".

Solar Flare

I watched this short video of a solar flare captured by SDO on New Year’s Eve. The video was on today’s APOD. They compared the prominence to a ballet:

Of particular interest is the tangled magnetic field that directs a type of solar ballet for the hot plasma as it falls back to the Sun.

The sun is approaching solar maximum sometime soon. In some circles, scientists believe we may already have passed the maximum which will prove to be a disappointment to greenbats. It will also disappoint some Ham radio operators who delight in ionospheric radio propagation which is enhanced by solar activity.

Acuña Cacti – Endangered Species Or Hype?

Acuña CactiAccording to the Associated Press, the acuña cactus is endangered by – get this – “drought and climate change and could be harmed by illegal immigration and border enforcement efforts.” (Via AZCENTRAL.COM.)

Pima County fact sheet for Acuña Cactus (Echinomastus erectocentrus var. acunensis) lists this species status as:

The Acuña cactus is a candidate species for the Threatened and Endangered list. The plant is protected by the Arizona Native Plant Law, and is protected for international trade by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The population may be threatened by illegal take and natural causes such as parasitism.

There is reference to neither border enforcement, drought nor climate change by the Pima County fact sheet. They do mention illegal taking of the cacti. I note that the “protection” by laws and international agreements do little to protect anything.

It seems to me that the greenbat and open-borders (so-called) journalists at AP insist on injecting their own guidelines as to what could be causing the population decline. Damsel suggested that illegal aliens cross the border, steal the cacti and put them in little pots for sale to tourists or for export to landscape and garden shops in the US.

The lone comment on the article in AZCENTRAL said “more bull …from the agenda 21 extremist crowd.” I cannot disagree with that.

Global Climate Change – Except It’s Not Global

Olympic RainWe hear all the greenbats proclaim that the current heat wave and drought throughout the US is due to “global climate change.” News media blames all this heat and dry on greenhouse gasses ostensibly emitted by us humans.

Well, consider this contrary little factoid: in London, where the Olympic Games are starting today, there will be high temperatures in the 60’s and lows in the 50’s with rain. Funny how the hot and dry reports here fail to include details about cool and wet weather someplace else on the globe.

As we say in the title, “Global Climate Change – Except It’s Not Global.”

Where Are The Hurricanes?

no-cyclones.jpgRemember when all the hurricanes were pounding Florida and the Gulf Coast a few years back? All the greenbats and global warmists were blaming greenhouse gas and other horrible man-made things for the weather; the warming apocalypse was nigh!

Well, it’s the middle of freaking huricane season and if you go to the National Weather Service’s National Hurricane Center website you get the “No tropical Cyclones at this time” message.

This must be An Inconvenient Truth for the Goracle and all the other warmist liars.

The Recycle Center

iris.jpgHaving a photo of an iris flower on a post about the recycle center might seem a little weird, but in the case of the county recycle center at the landfill in Palos Verdes, CA, there are pretty flowers all around. In fact, the South Coast Botanic Gardens is located just across the boulevard at the site of another landfill. Since the county maintains the garden, I assume they also provide the landscaping for the Recycle Center, although there are more exotic plant species over there.

As for recycling, we brought 2½ 33 gallon-sized bags of crushed aluminum cans for which they paid us around sixty-five bucks. They also take glass, numbered plastics, newspaper and used motor oil. Even though we aren’t greenbats, we do believe recycling is a good thing, especially if we get some cash for doing it.

The Recycle Center

recycle.jpgWhen we come to California to the old house, we bring our recyclable aluminum cans so we can turn them in to the County recycle center and get $$ back. We had quite a load this trip and actually got over a hundred bucks for the aluminum cans. We had been collecting them over several months.

The funny thing about the recycle trip is that we get most of our aluminum beverage cans in Arizona. In our state, we do not have the nutty greenbat notion of California Recycle Value (CRV), so we can take advantage of recycling our scrap aluminum and get the CRV back that we didn’t pay in the first place. 😀

Damsel took this picture of an unusual succulent just outside of the gate to the center. The large drooping flowers attracted a bunch of bees we could see buzzing around. Click on the image to enlarge.

California’s Sad Energy Trade Off

wind-farm.jpgCalifornia’s Greenbat politicians think that burning fossil fuel will destroy the planet, so what do they do? Trade off having wind power in favor of destroying many of nature’s flying creatures.

Consider this double standard. California Politicians are balking at the installation of a solar power site in the desert because it endangers tortoises and other wildlife. Their hypocrisy is so thick, it probably pollutes the atmosphere.

From William La Jeunesse of Fox News:

As California attempts to divorce itself from fossil-fueled electricity, it may be trading one environmental sin for another — although you don’t hear state officials admitting it.

Wind power is the fastest growing component in the state’s green energy portfolio, but wildlife advocates say the marriage has an unintended consequence: dead birds, including protected species of eagles, hawks and owls.
