Earth Hour Gone Sour

Times SquarePlanet Gore posted this picture of Times Square in New York City showing the effect of ‘Earth Hour.’ The top panel is Times Square before Earth Hour. The bottom panel is Times Square during Earth Hour. Damsel and I notice that only a couple displays are off. (Snark!) This is virtually, a fart in a windstorm.

Now, don’t get us wrong. We are fastidious recyclers, composters and rarely run more lights in the house than are barely needed. However, we’re also extremely skeptical of the motivations of the Greenbat crowd when they insist man-made energy consumption to be the cause global warming. They only need to look skyward at high noon to see the ‘Glow Ball‘ responsible for climate warming (and cooling).

As for our household, we celebrated ‘Earth Hour’ by watching ‘Cops’ and ‘America’s Most Wanted’ on the 42-inch plasma HiDef big screen with the full-on surround sound and each using a laptop to look at John Walsh’s AMW.com website.

On the Global Warming Resources page, I have included some ‘sage quotations’ attributes to a few of the smartest people in history. The purpose of including these is to demonstrate to modern greenbats (environmental alarmists) that their ‘consensus’ may be flawed due to violation of one or more of the principles these men advocated.

Science and Politics Don’t Mix

I watched an interview on a news program today that featured a ‘climate expert’ explaining away the recent winter storms as being a consequence of global warming. This ‘expert’ contended that the severity of winter storms actually increases because of anthropogenic climate contributions.

The ‘expert’ blithely ignores actual science – for instance, the current lull in sunspots and solar activity. For the past two years, sunspots have been few and far between. He also ignores the fact that polar ice caps are not decreasing, Florida’s land mass is not decreasing due to a rise in sea level and global ocean temperatures have decreased over the past several years (since 1998).

James Taranto posted the following piece in the “Best of the Web Today” on the topic of selective science validation:

Science’s Ordinary Magisterium

“Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth’s magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms,” Space.com reports:

The leaks are defying many of scientists’ previous ideas on how the interaction between Earth’s magnetosphere and solar wind occurs: The leaks are in an unexpected location, let in solar particles in faster than expected and the whole interaction works in a manner that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought.

Laymen may be confused by the notion of a scientific discovery “that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought.” After all, we keep reading that all scientists agree about global warming and no one may question it. Is science infallible or isn’t it?

The answer is: It depends. Scientific teachings that are part of the “ordinary magisterium,” such as those involving the interaction between Earth’s magnetosphere and solar wind, are not infallible. But global warming is what scientists call an ex cathedra* doctrine.

* In Catholic theology, the Latin phrase ex cathedra, literally meaning “from the chair”, refers to a teaching by the pope that is considered to be made with the intention of invoking infallibility. This is a concept that always has and always been unknown to true science – everything that is ‘known’ can be modified when ‘new knowledge’ is discovered.

Greenbats choose to cover their ears and say “la-la-la-la-la – I’m not listening,” when actual facts contradict their tunnel-vision views on climate. Very scientific, indeed.

Doubts Cast on Gore’s Climate Fanaticism

This week, Former Vice President Al Gore made the trip to Washington to make a pitch to President Elect Obama and Vice President Elect Biden on the path forward for dealing with climate change. At the same time Gore was doing this, new information regarding anthropogenic (man made) contribution to climate change was coming forth from the scientific community and the US Senate.

The United States Senate Minority Report holds that over 650 scientists (a growing number) now disagree with the claims of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. The 231 page report is filled with information discrediting the IPCC’s report. Here are some of the highlights:

  • 650 prominent international scientists have now changed their opinions
  • over 250 have changed their opinions since the report of 2007
  • only 52 UN scientists authored the media-hyped IPCC report and declared it a ‘consensus’

Things that may have contributed to their changing opinions include:

  • global temperatures failing to warm
  • studies predicting a continued lack of warming
  • a failed attempt to revive the discredited ‘Hockey Stick’
  • inconvenient developments and studies regarding CO2; the Sun; Clouds; Antarctica; the Arctic; Greenland; Mount Kilimanjaro; Hurricanes; Extreme Storms; Floods; Ocean Acidification; Polar Bears; lack of atmospheric dust; the failure of oceans to warm and rise as predicted

Despite the evidence that the so-called ‘consensus’ is breaking down, you can rely on the incoming administration and the majorities in both houses of congress to ignore the facts and proceed with their untenable climate and environmental agenda for the country.

While the financial fires are distracting everyone from ‘business as usual’ in Washington, House Democrats Push Climate Tax While Negotiating Fiscal Bailout. Never mind the man behind the curtain, Dorothy . . .

During a week where Americans were focused on perhaps the greatest economic challenges this country has faced in over a generation, House Democrats released a set of principles on October 2nd that outline an aggressive plan to cap greenhouse gas emissions. The plan could be even more economically restrictive than the failed Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act, which would have cost $6.7 trillion dollars, according to the bill’s own sponsors. That $6.7 trillion cost would have been passed on to families and workers across the country in the form of higher gas prices, higher electricity and heating/cooling bills, more expensive consumer goods, and higher workplace costs.

As we learned during this past summer’s debate on the failed Lieberman-Warner global warming cap-and-trade bill and with the recent victory on offshore drilling, the appetite of the American people to unlock America’s affordable energy resources is very strong. When it comes to being in touch with Americans, the House Democrats need a reality check. The current financial crisis only reinforces the public’s wariness about any climate bill that attempts to increase the costs of energy and jeopardizes jobs.

The Greening of the Polar Bear

This week, the Department of the Interior caved in to the Greenbats by declaring a thriving species “endangered.”

How do you declare a species endangered when its numbers are increasing?

Once again, my profession — journalism — failed its fundamental duty to report the facts Wednesday as the Interior Department bowed to political pressure from green groups to declare polar bears an threatened species due to global warming. This, despite the fact that bear populations have increased from 5,000–10,000 in the early 1970s to between 20,000 and 25,000 today (during the very period their habitat was allegedly shrinking). This is in part due to concentrated efforts to impose harvesting controls that have allowed this once-overhunted species to recover.

Indeed, Dr. Mitchell Taylor, a bear biologist with the Canadian government, wrote in 2006: “There is no need to panic. Of the 13 populations of polar bears in Canada, 11 are stable or increasing in number. They are not going extinct, or even appear to be affected at present.”

According to new research, the numbers of the giant predator have grown by between 15 and 25 per cent over the last decade.

Some authorities on Arctic wildlife even claim that hunting, and not global arming, has been the real cause of the decrease in polar bear numbers in areas where the species is in decline.

A leading Canadian authority on polar bears, Mitch Taylor, said: “We’re seeing an increase in bears that’s really unprecedented, and in places where we’re seeing a decrease in the population it’s from hunting, not from climate change.”

Mr Taylor estimates that during the past decade, the Canadian polar bear population has increased by 25 per cent – from 12,000 to 15,000 bears.

UPDATE: Iain Murray offers that this is NOT about polar bears.

Quite right. This was nothing to do with the polar bear and everything to do with advancing a ludicrous “alternative energy now” agenda.

It appears that Interior Secretary Dick Kempthorne is listening to whoever beats the drum louder. In the case of the polar bears, science disagrees with the listing, but Kempthorne is concerned about a ‘legacy.’ In an unrelated issue, that of carrying firearms in National Parks, Kempthorne listened to 51 U.S. Senators who recommended a rules change to allow the NPS to comply with local state law on carrying.

This puts Kempthorne in a position to be embraced by greens and gunners alike.

Don’t you just love politicians?
