His ‘n’ Hers

A little belated, but now that the waiting period is over, I finally have my anniversary present. We took it to the range today, and had a lot of fun firing his’n’hers pistols at the 25 foot targets. We’re still getting used to the new firearms, so nothing to brag about – well, not yet at least.

Depicted is our pair of pistols. My new one is the black double-action S&W 908 on top. Damsel’s is the S&W 908s shown below. The guns are identical mechanically, but Damsel’s is “prettier” according to her.

My assessment of this gun is that it is a very good value for a compact double-action pistol. Even though I just fired it for the first time today, it seems to have a smooth action and a modest recoil for a 9mm. The design is simple and straight forward. Field stripping and re-assembly is a snap; cleaning it is a breeze. Oil it up, reassemble, wipe it off and it’s ready to go again.

My first shots:

Creeping Charlie

The little pale-blue blossom of the “Creeping Charlie” is decorated with tiny symmetrical patterns — very delicate and pretty. These short-lived blossoms are currently growing on a plant I have in the shady part of our patio.

From WIKIPEDIA:

Glechoma hederacea (Ground-ivy) is a an aromatic, perennial, evergreen creeper of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to Europe and southwestern Asia but introduced to North America and now common in most regions other than the Rocky Mountains. Its common names include Alehoof, Creeping Charlie (or Charley), Catsfoot (from the size and shape of the leaf), Field Balm, Run-away-robin, Ground Ivy, Gill-over-the-ground, and Tunhoof.

It can be identified by its round to reniform (kidney or fan shaped), crenate (with round toothed edges) opposed leaves 2-3 cm diameter, on 3-6 cm long petioles attached to square stems which root at the nodes. It is a variable species, its size being influenced by environmental conditions, from 5 cm up to 50 cm tall.

Man-Made Sunspots

I’ve written about solar phenomena and sunspots several times in our Global Warming category, but haven’t covered the man-made variety. This is from APOD:

Sharp Silhouette

Though it’s 93 million miles away, the Sun still hurts your eyes when you look at it. But bright sunlight (along with accurate planning and proper equipment!) resulted in this sharp silhouette of spaceship and space station. The amazing telescopic view, recorded on September 17, captures shuttle orbiter Atlantis and the International Space Station in orbit over planet Earth. At a range of 550 kilometers from the observing site near Mamers, Normandy, France, Atlantis (left) has just undocked and moved about 200 meters away from the space station.

The Farce at Turd Hole Bay

The true character of the persons speaking at opening of the General Assembly of the United Nations became evident as they delivered their remarks. President Bush was eloquent and visionary, speaking the truth about the nature of the enemy and what must be done. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke like the deluded power-hungry despot he is, and Hugo Chavez went beyond the pale with his insane and hateful rhetoric accusing the United States of seeking to dominate the world. Indeed, Chavez’ remarks seemed humorous to the president of the General Assembly.

If you care to indulge the insanity, Ahmadinejad’s complete rant is translated at Vital Perspective.

Allahpundit has a video of Chavez’ melt-down, in which he calls President Bush “the devil.” Un.be.lieve.able!

I still stand beside my assertion that the most dangerous people in the world congregate in sanctuary at the United Nations — these recent developments should convince all of us that the UN is completely worthless to the United States and we need to withdraw NOW.

Organized Labor Crime

Apparently, we’re not the only ones who know the truth about unions. My opinion? The only difference between organized labor and organized crime is the way the second word is spelled. From CNS News:

Unions Have Embraced Anti-War Extremism, Report Says.

(CNSNews.com) – Labor leaders have established a close relationship with anti-American, anti-war activists as part of a move to the political left that began more than three decades ago, according to a recent report produced by a conservative think tank.

“Prominent self-styled ‘peace activists’ such as Cindy Sheehan, Leslie Cagan and Ramsey Clark rarely waste an opportunity to portray America as the number one obstacle to world peace,” said Carl Horowitz, author of the report “Common Cause With America’s Enemies: How Labor Unions Embraced Antiwar Extremism.”
