Global Warming

Be Very Skeptical of Climate Change Alarmists

Via Planet Gore:

Don’t look now, but maybe a scientific consensus exists concerning global warming after all. Only 36 percent of geoscientists and engineers believe that humans are creating a global warming crisis, according to a survey reported in the peer-reviewed Organization Studies. By contrast, a strong majority of the 1,077 respondents believe that nature is the primary cause of recent global warming and/or that future global warming will not be a very serious problem.

Over a thousand scientists and engineers participated in a control group study in which the vast majority were skeptical of the so-called “consensus.” Here is a write-up I did a few years ago called “Sage Quotations” in which four of the smartest men in history have weighed in on their opinion of those who would violate one or more of the principles these men advocated.

Leonardo Da VinciLeonardo Da Vinci has often been described as the archetype of the renaissance man, a man whose unquenchable curiosity was equaled only by his powers of invention. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived.

“Anyone who conducts an argument by appealing to authority is not using his intelligence; he is just using his memory.”
— Leonardo Da Vinci

Galileo GalileiGalileo Galilei, was a Tuscan physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His achievements include improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations, and support for Copernicanism. Galileo has been called the “father of modern observational astronomy”, the “father of modern physics”, and “the Father of Modern Science.”

“I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.”
— Galileo Galilei

Philip HandlerPhilip Handler, was an American Nutritionist and President of the National Academy of Science for 2 terms. Handler was also a recipient of the National Medal of Science. He also believed that experimental observation, judiciously and honestly conducted, is the first obligation of the experimental scientist and that theory must be compatible with observation, not the reverse.

“Scientists best serve public policy by living within the ethics of science, not those of politics. If the scientific community will not unfrock the charlatans, the public will not discern the difference; science and the nation will suffer.”
— Philip Handler, National Academy of Sciences

Michael CrichtonJohn Michael Crichton, M.D., was an American author, producer, director, and physician, best known for his work in the science fiction, medical fiction, and thriller genres. His books have sold over 150 million copies worldwide. As the creator of the TV series ER, most famously as the author of Jurassic Park, and its sequel The Lost World, which were both adapted into high grossing films and leading to the very successful franchise. In 1994 he became the only creative artist ever to experience chart-topping success in America with a film, a television series, and a novel, all at number one simultaneously.

“Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had.”
— Michael Crichton

Al Gore? James Hansen? IPCC? Are you idiots not listening to the sage advice from some of the smartest men in history?

Global Warming Has Stopped

According to scientists being quoted by (of all the unlikely media places) The London Telegraph. Their article entitled “Global warming at a standstill, new Met Office figures show,” is reproduced, in part, below.

The Met Office has downgraded its forecast for global warming to suggest that by 2017 temperatures will have remained about the same for two decades.

A new scientific model has revised previous figures for the next five years downwards by around a fifth.

The forecast compares how much higher average world temperatures are likely to be than the “long-term average” from 1971-2000.

It had been thought that this would be 0.54C during the period 2012 -2016 but new data puts the figure for the 2013-2017 period at 0.43C.

This figure is little higher than the 0.40C recorded in 1998, the warmest year in the Met Office Hadley Centre’s 160-year record – suggesting global warming will have stalled in the intervening two-decade period.

However, it is thought that factors such as ocean current patterns may be behind the slowdown and scientists say the “variability” in climate change does not alter the long-term trend of rising temperatures.

Of course, the usual “however” statement (highlighted) leaves the door open for future panic.

Biofuels May Actually Deplete Atmospheric Ozone

Biofuels May Actually Deplete Atmospheric OzoneI read a scientific study today from CO2 Science that indicates biofuels may be harmful to the atmosphere. It is a well-documented reality that biofuels do not emit less CO2 than fossil fuels as they are purported to do.

Now, there is a scientific paper that suggests biofuels deplete ozone in the atmosphere. The ozone layer protects the surface of the Earth from intense solar UV radiation.

Image: a humorous look at how to put biofuels into your gas tank

The paper notes that nitrogen-based fertilizer used in the production of crops to be used in biofuels, cause nitrous oxide (N2O) to be emitted when burning them. N2O is yet another greenhouse gas that has been known for over 40 years to deplete stratospheric ozone.

The conclusion from the CO2 Science report follows:

In light of their findings, as [the authors] state in the concluding sentence of their report, “increased biofuels production and consumption could therefore be damaging to the ozone layer,” which would be detrimental to the biosphere due to the fact that the stratospheric ozone layer filters out much of the harmful UV-B radiation coming from the sun, which otherwise could do much damage to earth’s terrestrial plants.

I emphasized that last statement to point out the potential vicious cycle of destroying or adversely affecting the crops from which the fuels are made. This whole biofuel debacle is just another example of the liberal “superstition trumps science” untruth.

An Actual Weatherman Debunks NOAA Claims

TV Weatherman Joe Bastardi, best known for his AccuWeather reports, has penned an article at The Patriot Post dealing with “Data Deception.” Joe starts out with a few links to debunk NOAA’s assertion that July, 2012 was the hottest July on record, which of course is more of NOAA and NASA’s chronic misinformation. Joe then continues with these thoughts on current conditions and how the gullible media stokes the non-existent fire with their brand of Chicken Little hysteria:

best-name-evah.jpgIt is true that it is very warm off the Northeast Coast, which is part of the reason I am so concerned that like the 1950s, the northeast is vulnerable to hurricane landfalls. However, it’s very cold off the West Coast. That should be relevant also when talking about how warm the waters are off our coasts. (It’s part of the cold cycle of the Pacific we have entered.)

One can read the debunking [at this link], but I wish to make a few other points. There seems to be a common thread with people who believe their idea of absolute truth means they can say and do whatever they want to get to that truth. The result is a series of loud announcements that grab the attention of a gullible media, and when debunked, do not have near the coverage as the original pronouncement.

Global Climate Change – Except It’s Not Global

Olympic RainWe hear all the greenbats proclaim that the current heat wave and drought throughout the US is due to “global climate change.” News media blames all this heat and dry on greenhouse gasses ostensibly emitted by us humans.

Well, consider this contrary little factoid: in London, where the Olympic Games are starting today, there will be high temperatures in the 60’s and lows in the 50’s with rain. Funny how the hot and dry reports here fail to include details about cool and wet weather someplace else on the globe.

As we say in the title, “Global Climate Change – Except It’s Not Global.”
