Stop Whining About Hurricane Katrina

hurricane.jpgThe science is in on the effects of temperature and hurricane intensity and it doesn’t implicate Global Warming, but rather just the opposite. It’s time for the perpetual victims of Katrina (not actually that strong of a storm Rita was much stronger) to stop whining about the non-existent connection between warm climate and hurricane intensity.

I read the article Tropical Cyclones (Atlantic Ocean – Global Warming Effects: Intensity) — Summary on the CO2 Science website and these paragraphs jumped out at me:

As a result of these efforts, the two researchers determined that “alternating periods of quiescent conditions and frequent hurricane landfall are recorded in the sedimentary record and likely indicate that climate conditions may have modulated hurricane activity on millennial timescales.” Of special interest in this regard, as they describe it, is the fact that “several major hurricanes occur in the western Long Island record during the latter part of the Little Ice Age (~1550-1850 AD) when sea surface temperatures were generally colder than present,” but that “no major hurricanes have impacted this area since 1893,” when the earth experienced the warming that took it from the Little Ice Age to the Current Warm Period.

Noting that Emanuel (2005) and Webster et al. (2005) had produced analyses that suggest that “cooler climate conditions in the past may have resulted in fewer strong hurricanes,” but that their own findings suggest just the opposite, Scileppe and Donnelly concluded that “other climate phenomena, such as atmospheric circulation, may have been favorable for intense hurricane development despite lower sea surface temperatures” prior to the development of the Current Warm Period. Perhaps, therefore, we have much-maligned global warming to thank for the complete absence of major hurricanes in the vicinity of New York City over the past 115 years.

Emphasis mine.

So the Little Ice Age (Maunder Minimum) brought havoc to the North Atlantic Region and since then the storm intensities have subsided. So it seems that the sunspots influence global temperatures in a manner that’s inversely proportional to the intensity of hurricanes in the North Atlantic.

This is one more scientific clue that the clueless will ignore.

Science and Politics Don’t Mix

I watched an interview on a news program today that featured a ‘climate expert’ explaining away the recent winter storms as being a consequence of global warming. This ‘expert’ contended that the severity of winter storms actually increases because of anthropogenic climate contributions.

The ‘expert’ blithely ignores actual science – for instance, the current lull in sunspots and solar activity. For the past two years, sunspots have been few and far between. He also ignores the fact that polar ice caps are not decreasing, Florida’s land mass is not decreasing due to a rise in sea level and global ocean temperatures have decreased over the past several years (since 1998).

James Taranto posted the following piece in the “Best of the Web Today” on the topic of selective science validation:

Science’s Ordinary Magisterium

“Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth’s magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms,” Space.com reports:

The leaks are defying many of scientists’ previous ideas on how the interaction between Earth’s magnetosphere and solar wind occurs: The leaks are in an unexpected location, let in solar particles in faster than expected and the whole interaction works in a manner that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought.

Laymen may be confused by the notion of a scientific discovery “that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought.” After all, we keep reading that all scientists agree about global warming and no one may question it. Is science infallible or isn’t it?

The answer is: It depends. Scientific teachings that are part of the “ordinary magisterium,” such as those involving the interaction between Earth’s magnetosphere and solar wind, are not infallible. But global warming is what scientists call an ex cathedra* doctrine.

* In Catholic theology, the Latin phrase ex cathedra, literally meaning “from the chair”, refers to a teaching by the pope that is considered to be made with the intention of invoking infallibility. This is a concept that always has and always been unknown to true science – everything that is ‘known’ can be modified when ‘new knowledge’ is discovered.

Greenbats
choose to cover their ears and say “la-la-la-la-la – I’m not listening,” when actual facts contradict their tunnel-vision views on climate. Very scientific, indeed.

Snow in the Canyon and Beyond

I checked the National Parks System webcams today and was not disappointed with the scene I saw at Grand Canyon, Yavapai Point. Later this month, Damsel will be capturing scenic photos like this (we hope) when we’re in Northern Arizona.

Canyon Snow

Just a note about the winter storm that just passed through the southwest – snow in Malibu, California? Four inches in Las Vegas, Nevada? Sunspots at a minimum? Must be that pesky Glow Ball Worming.

Maybe some of the alarmists should find out more about the Sun.

Doubts Cast on Gore’s Climate Fanaticism

This week, Former Vice President Al Gore made the trip to Washington to make a pitch to President Elect Obama and Vice President Elect Biden on the path forward for dealing with climate change. At the same time Gore was doing this, new information regarding anthropogenic (man made) contribution to climate change was coming forth from the scientific community and the US Senate.

The United States Senate Minority Report holds that over 650 scientists (a growing number) now disagree with the claims of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore. The 231 page report is filled with information discrediting the IPCC’s report. Here are some of the highlights:

  • 650 prominent international scientists have now changed their opinions
  • over 250 have changed their opinions since the report of 2007
  • only 52 UN scientists authored the media-hyped IPCC report and declared it a ‘consensus’

Things that may have contributed to their changing opinions include:

  • global temperatures failing to warm
  • studies predicting a continued lack of warming
  • a failed attempt to revive the discredited ‘Hockey Stick’
  • inconvenient developments and studies regarding CO2; the Sun; Clouds; Antarctica; the Arctic; Greenland; Mount Kilimanjaro; Hurricanes; Extreme Storms; Floods; Ocean Acidification; Polar Bears; lack of atmospheric dust; the failure of oceans to warm and rise as predicted

You can view this information on the US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works Minority Page.

Despite the evidence that the so-called ‘consensus’ is breaking down, you can rely on the incoming administration and the majorities in both houses of congress to ignore the facts and proceed with their untenable climate and environmental agenda for the country.

Be sure to visit our Climate and Global Warming information and resources page for lots of backup information on the real cause of climate change.

Michael Crichton – 1942-2008

michael-crichton.jpgWe sadly report the passing of famous author and screenwriter, Michael Crichton. He died after a private battle with cancer on November 4, 2008. We respected Dr. Crichton not only for his immense scientific and literary talents, but also for his practical views on the global warming hoax.

From Wikipedia:

In 2003 he gave a lecture at Caltech entitled “Aliens Cause Global Warming” in which he expressed his views of the danger of “consensus science” — especially with regard to what he regards as popular but disputed theories such as nuclear winter, the dangers of second-hand smoke, and the global warming controversy. Crichton was critical of widespread belief in ETs and UFOs, citing the fact that there is no conclusive proof of their existence. Crichton stated that “The Drake equation cannot be tested and therefore SETI is not science. SETI is unquestionably a religion.” Crichton has commented that belief in purported scientific theories without a factual basis is more akin to faith than science.

One of the quotes from that topic was this one that we keep on our Climate and Global Warming page:

Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled. Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had.

— Michael Crichton

House Democrats Push Climate Tax

While the financial fires are distracting everyone from ‘business as usual’ in Washington, House Democrats Push Climate Tax While Negotiating Fiscal Bailout. Never mind the man behind the curtain, Dorothy . . .

From Senator Jim Inhofe’s EPS blog:

During a week where Americans were focused on perhaps the greatest economic challenges this country has faced in over a generation, House Democrats released a set of principles on October 2nd that outline an aggressive plan to cap greenhouse gas emissions. The plan could be even more economically restrictive than the failed Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act, which would have cost $6.7 trillion dollars, according to the bill’s own sponsors. That $6.7 trillion cost would have been passed on to families and workers across the country in the form of higher gas prices, higher electricity and heating/cooling bills, more expensive consumer goods, and higher workplace costs.

As we learned during this past summer’s debate on the failed Lieberman-Warner global warming cap-and-trade bill and with the recent victory on offshore drilling, the appetite of the American people to unlock America’s affordable energy resources is very strong. When it comes to being in touch with Americans, the House Democrats need a reality check. The current financial crisis only reinforces the public’s wariness about any climate bill that attempts to increase the costs of energy and jeopardizes jobs.

There is much more, including links to some very interesting information at the EPS Blog.

CO2 Truth-Alert

One important issue that has been eclipsed by the mortgage crisis and presidential politics is the issue of Global Warming and the effects of CO2 on the environment. One of my favorite websites, CO2 Science, has a “Truth Alert” archive that now features videos on these still-important topics. This one is about Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent lies put forth by climate ‘experts.’

Hurricane Katrina: (Uploaded 2 October 2008)
Shortly after making landfall in late August of 2005 – and causing massive destruction and death along the Gulf Coast of the United States – several prominent scientists and a host of climate alarmists began claiming that hurricane Katrina was a product of CO2-induced global warming. Is there any scientific truth to this claim?
