For the term "442".

Packin’ Heat for Catalina Island

This year for our trip to Catalina Island, we took a flight to the island on Island Express Helicopters, just as we did last year. I took some video of the last trip that you can see at this link. Damsel took some stills this year which I stitched together in the composite below – the helicopter arrival at the helipad – the departure over Los Angeles Harbor – Passing Avalon Bay – on the pad at Pebbly Beach.

Catalina by air

However, we did something this year that we have never done before – we took firearms. I made a couple of calls to Island Express and Catalina Express (the boat coming back) to inquire about the policies for bringing firearms for non-CCW private citizens. (We have the Utah CCW but the idiots in the California Legislature deem that to be worthless here).

The helicopter folks told us to declare the firearms to the attendant who would ensure that they were packed in the baggage compartment. We were instructed to pack the ammo in separate luggage.

The boat people said to present the weapons to the Captain of the vessel before boarding and the same admonition for packing ammo as before.

Since we didn’t want to take the guns with us during the day while we were touring and dining, we had the hotel clerk lock them in a safe compartment for which I was presented the only key.

We packed the guns (S&W 686 and 442) in their original cases with padlocks. To avoid blatantly carrying gun cases in the terminals and around the streets of Avalon, I packed both cases in a paper supermarket shopping bag which I kept with me at all times until surrendering to the transportation agents.

Lessons learned – we can get both revolvers into a single case since the 442 is very small and the 686 has a short barrel. The safe boxes do not have any padding, so there was metal-to-metal contact during storage and handling of the box. Next time we will put the guns in a pouch or padded gun case when we put them into the safe.

Gun Fun

I know that the guys and gals that participated in the Para Bloggers event at Blackwater had a lot of fun. We’re jealous that we didn’t have that opportunity, but we made do with our weekly trip to the range.

We always have a lot of fun when we go to our local indoor range. We generally start out with the handgun selection, usually 5 guns, one revolver – a .357 magnum or .38 special – and four pistols – two each of 9mm and .45 ACP. We put about fifty rounds – sometimes more – through the 9’s and 45’s and somewhat less through the revolver. At the end of the session, we break out the shotguns and put about 25 rounds through each of those – one 12 and one 20 gauge.

Here Damsel demonstrates her skills with her little S&W 442 .38 special, then with the Para Warthog .45 ACP semi-auto and finally with her 20 gauge Remington 870 express shotgun.

The Girl Guns

This is my current collection of hand guns. I took the picture after cleaning them up from the trip to the range. Clockwise from the top: S&W 908s 9mm, S&W 686 .357 magnum, S&W 442 .38 special and my Para Warthog .45 ACP. Not shown is my Remington 870 20 gauge shotgun.

I say my ‘current collection’ because that may change soon. Stay tuned.

My Girl Gun

You have to admit that most guys would avoid taking a picture of their guns on a pink towel in the laundry basket. This little baby goes with me everywhere, even when I do the laundry.

I think she’s pretty with her red rosewood grips and shiny black frame.

Long Target Practice

ammo-boxesWe missed target practice a couple of weeks ago. So, to make up for it, we took some extra ammo and brought seven firearms:

  1. Smith & Wesson 442 .38 spl +P
  2. Smith & Wesson 908s 9mm
  3. Glock 26 9mm
  4. Glock 30 .45 ACP
  5. Para Warthog .45 ACP
  6. Remington 870 20 ga
  7. Remington 870 12 ga 6+1

I took this picture of the recycle bin after we broke down the ammo boxes. To be fair, this bunch includes the ammo boxes we used to reload the magazines for the pistols after cleaning them today.      Click to zoomography.

I wonder what the dumpster divers think when peeking in our recycle bins on trash day.

Off to the Range in the new Pelican Case

This is the hardware we took to the range today for our weekly target practice. Nicely packed in our new Pelican Case model 1450, (from top left, clockwise) Glock 30, Glock 26, S&W 908, S&W 442 and S&W 686.

We acquired the case a couple of weeks ago. As you see, it nicely holds these five compact firearms. The case is rugged, watertight, dust proof and has stainless steel hinge pins and padlock hardware. We didn’t have to modify the foam that shipped with the case although it accommodates removal of ‘cubes’ to fit any custom shape.

Blackfive

No, it’s not about the popular milblog Blackfive. It’s our five black guns lined up for a group photo. Top to bottom, left to right, (ignoring the magazines) they are: Remington 870 Express Synthetic 12 gauge 6+1 shotgun, Glock 30 .45ACP 10+1 pistol, Smith & Wesson 442 .38 special 5-shot revolver, Smith & Wesson 908 9mm 8+1 pistol and Glock 26 9mm 10+1 pistol.
