Off to the Range in the new Pelican Case

This is the hardware we took to the range today for our weekly target practice. Nicely packed in our new Pelican Case model 1450, (from top left, clockwise) Glock 30, Glock 26, S&W 908, S&W 442 and S&W 686.

We acquired the case a couple of weeks ago. As you see, it nicely holds these five compact firearms. The case is rugged, watertight, dust proof and has stainless steel hinge pins and padlock hardware. We didn’t have to modify the foam that shipped with the case although it accommodates removal of ‘cubes’ to fit any custom shape.

Pigskin Withdrawals

Now that the football season is over, I have the usual withdrawal syndrome. This is the first weekend in a long time without the usual football fix.

I’m not too crazy about NHL, NBA or March Madness, so those aren’t an outlet. Baseball doesn’t interest either of us very much until September or October, and by then the gridirons are active again. So what do I do in the meantime?

Well, for one thing, I got a Reyn Spooner official 2008 Pro Bowl NFC Hawaiian Shirt. It’s just like the coaches and teams wore in Hawaii last weekend. That helps.

And, just in case that isn’t enough, we have the following excellent list of football-themed DVDs queued up in the DVD player to watch on the new big-screen HDTV. That should help more. Sort of like football methadone.

  • Friday Night Lights – Billy Bob Thornton
  • Game Plan – Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
  • Gridiron Gang – Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
  • Invincible – Mark Wahlberg
  • The Longest Yard – both old and new – Adam Sandler and Burt Reynolds
  • Radio – Cuba Gooding Jr.
  • Remember the Titans – Denzel Washington
  • The Replacements – Orlando Jones, Gene Hackman, Keanu Reeves
  • Rudy – Sean Astin

Getting Your Money’s Worth

shortly after the shotguns came outFor the last couple of weeks, we have used these huge silhouette targets at the range. First, we use the target when we shoot our hand guns. When there are too many holes in it to see what we’re hitting, we haul it back in and stick on an adhesive target (we get the ‘Shoot ‘n’ See’ targets that turn neon green at the point of impact). The adhesive target rejuvenates the silhouette enough for at least the next box or two of rounds.

This hardy fellow, however, hung in for all fifty rounds (25 twelve and 25 twenty gauge shells). He wasn’t much of his former self, but he saw to it we got our money’s worth. Now don’t get me wrong – we can afford targets and often will put one up for a few rounds to check sighting and individual accuracy. Today, however, we were having a lot of fun seeing how long this one would last.

Superbowl BBQ

xlii.jpgWhat a great Sunday! After a nice outing to the shooting range, we came home and prepared our annual Superbowl Barbecue. The game is great (still watching it as I type), and the meal was outstanding. The chili had been cooking all day in the crockpot and was ready by the time the hamburgers and hot dogs went on the grill. The menu consisted of oven-baked potato wedges, chili dogs and chili-cheese-avocado burgers. Very filling – we took our walk while the Weirdos were performing at halftime. I think that was the name of the group.

Last 2007 Target Practice

On our last session at the target range for the year, we left the 9mm pistols at home and took the .357 magnum and the .38 special Smith & Wesson revolvers. In addition to the revolvers and our shotguns, we also took the Glock 30 and Damsel’s Para Warthog. The hand guns are shown ready for cleaning in Damsel’s photo below.

groupWhen it was my turn to put up a target for my .45 caliber Glock 30 pistol, I surprised myself when I got 9 out of 10 rounds in the red and black part of the target. Four rounds were in the red, two grazed the red and three were in the black (the one at the left below the 8 is a double).

I shot one round which missed badly and nicked the bottom of the target (out of the frame).

If it’s true (like Robb Allen says) that Sarah Brady cries when you hit a bullseye, I wonder if she snivels when you come close?

I hope so.

NFL Caves In On Pats-Giants Game

I guess the NFL knows just who in the hell John Kerry is.

nflPatriots’ historic game to be available to all of America, after all

Associated Press

NEW YORK — After weeks of insisting they wouldn’t cave in, NFL officials did just that Wednesday. Now all of America can see the Patriots’ shot at history.

Saturday night’s game between New England and the New York Giants on the NFL Network, which is available in fewer than 40 percent of the nation’s homes with TVs, will be simulcast on CBS and NBC.

This is sad when Senator Kerry uses his senate seat to intimidate private business.

The Trouble with Reloads

dingUnless you reload them yourself (and we haven’t started yet), you take your chances when purchasing reloaded rounds.

Today, for the second time ever, my Glock 30 .45ACP pistol jammed on this round. Evidently, a dent in the bullet got caught on the edge of the barrel as the round was on it’s way to be fired.

A closer look at the other reloaded rounds revealed a lot of dings and dents on the bullets. Most of the brass is also dinged up especially on the rim.

As readers of this site know, Damsel can’t shoot these in her Para Warthog. The good news is that her pistol jammed only once today using new ammo.
