Shooting

Range Report

We had an interesting and fun time today at the range. At first, it was pretty busy, with most of the lanes occupied with shooters. Later, business seemed to taper off a bit with just us and one other booth occupied. I guess that folks were home watching wild card football playoffs or something.

I snapped three images of the sparsely occupied range and stitched them together to make this panoramic image. Because she moved between the second and third snapshots, Damsel appears to be two people. Click for full-size.

Shooting was great today. We each shot about 100 rounds of .45s using the Glock 30 and the Warthog – which had NO misfeeds today. We also shot a couple of boxes of 9mm through the Glock 26 and S&W 908s. We even shot about 35 rounds of .38 special with Damsel’s S&W 686. To top it off, we shot 25 rounds each of 20 and 12 gauge with the Remington 870s.

We both agree it was a pretty good day of shooting.

A Video Christmas Card

I can’t exactly send this card in an envelope, but it goes out to two people that helped me when I was having troubles with my Para Ordinance Warthog .45 ACP compact pistol.

First of all, to Michael Bane, who took an interest in my problems and referred me to someone who could help solve them.

Merry Christmas, Michael!

Secondly, to Kerby Smith, of Para’s Communications and Public Relations, who got the gun into the shop and saw to it that it got the attention it needed. Kerby also sent me an instructional Todd Jarrett video showing techniques to be used when shooting short-barreled .45s. Kerby also gave me some advice on cleaning and lubrication.

Merry Christmas, Kerby!

As you can see from the video, I’m enjoying shooting my Warthog instead of agonizing over the next misfeed or stovepipe. Thank you guys for all the help!

My First Smith & Wesson Guns

smiths.jpgSeveral years ago, when we decided to get back into guns and shooting, our firearms choices were based on simplicity and reliability. We both had prior experience with guns and shooting, but enough time had passed, that we wanted to resume at an entry level.

My entry choice for a handgun was a .357 revolver – a short-barreled Smith and Wesson model 686. The advantages of this type of gun is that it’s compact, easy to point and shoot and uses either .38 special or .357 magnum ammunition. The .38 loads produce less recoil than the .357 loads.

I thought that a small semi-automatic pistol would be a good choice. I chose a Smith and Wesson model 908S nine millimeter semi automatic pistol. Advantages of this type of gun include compact size, light weight, easy to use and the ability to quickly reload the 8-round magazine with a standby magazine.

I have been really happy with these two original choices. The two went with me to the range today.

Range Report

Not much to report today. We shot the usual assortment of guns and calibers. All of it was enjoyable, if not close enough to the center of the targets. We’re getting better, though.

Worse Than Black Friday – The Gun Show

Damsel and I attempted to go to the Gun Show today. We got as far as the parking lot at the fairgrounds when we noticed a HUGE throng waiting in what appeared to be an hour-long line to get into the show. Clearly, the Obama elect effect is in evidence here today.

waiting

We mutually decided that the wait, plus what would obviously be overcrowding inside, would not be a good investment in our time nor in the wear and tear on the nerves. We executed a missed approach and headed back to home base.

I ordered everything that we had on our gun show wish list (except ammo, of course – %&*?!@ California laws) from on-line sources when we got home. I found some good deals on the shooting accessories and cleaning items we needed.

In a while, I’m going to fire up the BBQ and crank out a couple of Beef Tenderloin Steaks for the main meal today. I’m nursing a Samuel Adams as I write this and Damsel is sipping some Chardonnay – our attitude adjustments are in progress.

The Shotgun Setup

As always, we had fun at the target range today. Among other things, we took our shotguns and took turns trying to shoot the targets in two. In this video, Damsel almost gets the job done with her 20 gauge Remington 870, leaving the bottom of the target hanging by three narrow threads of paper.

I don’t have it on video, but after she left the target setup for the coup de grâce, I stepped into the booth with my 12 gauge Remington 870 and took out the three remaining thin threads with the first three shells. Not to worry though, Damsel has taken out plenty of setups that I left. We don’t keep score, since both of us do about the same.

In the last frame of the video, notice the ejected 20 gauge shell just about to hit the right booth wall.

Nothing to report about the shooting today other than everything seemed to be 100% functional and we had a lot of fun.
