Today at the Gun Show

gun-show.jpgEvery few months, we head off to the Gun Show. Today, we took the drive down to the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, CA.

As most of those who attend gun shows know, there are few guns and almost everything else. We saw jewelry, crystal and optics*, polished rocks, luggage, apparel, bumper stickers, safes and just about anything related to firearms. There is also plenty of stuff having nothing to do with guns or shooting, including a couple of “Ron Paul for President” booths.

* The Swarovski Group manufactures optics for guns as well as fine crystal and jewelry. One enterprising couple has a booth where Pop is selling Scopes in one half and Mom has a nice selection of crystal in the other half.

One especially pushy sales lady was hard-selling stuffed pillows that transformed into “bed pets.”

“Lady,” I said, “do you think I came to a gun show to buy a freakin’ pillow?”

In spite of all of the non-gun stuff, we bought magazines for the new Warthog and Glock 30 pistols, a T-shirt, a “Route 66” tote bag, some silhouette targets and a thousand rounds of .45 ACP.

Gun Love

Sorry for the thin blogging as of late. We’ve lost two computers in a week and trying to recover. The laptop lost it’s hard drive and the old workstation had a power supply failure (we think). Meanwhile, watch this short video of Damsel having fun at the range.

She’s a real gun lover . . .

Polishing The Jewels

jewels-hogWe’re still in the break-in of Damsel’s Para Ordinance Warthog .45 ACP pistol, so we don’t quite have the final report as of yet. The pistol seems to be taking a bit longer to get used to, since it has been finicky about feeding rounds into the chamber. There is also more lubrication and wiping off the excess involved.

Damsel considers the chore to be like polishing up her jewelry. Click on the image for a closer look.

Blackfive

No, it’s not about the popular milblog Blackfive. It’s our five black guns lined up for a group photo. Top to bottom, left to right, (ignoring the magazines) they are: Remington 870 Express Synthetic 12 gauge 6+1 shotgun, Glock 30 .45ACP 10+1 pistol, Smith & Wesson 442 .38 special 5-shot revolver, Smith & Wesson 908 9mm 8+1 pistol and Glock 26 9mm 10+1 pistol.

One of our comrades-in-arms, The Wandering Minstrel, has started his own blog to address (mostly) second amendment topics. We have added a link on our second-amendment blogroll.

Report – Glock 30

glock-30-magsWe wanted to report on Damsel’s Para Ordinance Warthog, but she’s still breaking it in. We will post something next week for sure.

Today, however, I would like to report on my new Glock 30. The picture at the right shows the pistol in a Bianchi holster. Two ten-round magazines are supplied with the pistol and are shown loaded with .45ACP ammo.

I really like this gun. As is the case with my Glock 26 9mm pistol, it’s accurate, smooth and easily stripped for cleaning. I’ve had it out to the range three times now and have had no problems.

Out of the box, it just started performing like an already-broken-in semi-automatic pistol. No jams, no feeding problems and the only complaint I have is with my own ability to hand-load the last of the 10 rounds into the magazine. I eventually get it done, but it takes considerable force. (I am NOT a wimp!) Eventually, the springs will relax and it will be easier to load.

The Glock 30 is an affordable .45 ACP carry gun. It offers a compromise between size and capacity coupled with the stopping power of the venerable .45 ACP.

Baby Boomer

para-poofWe’re preparing a report on Damsel’s new Para Ordinance Warthog; it should be done in a day or two. We just seem to run out of evenings and weekends before getting everything done.

Since I wanted some backup graphics for the report, I took a couple of short videos as we fired the .45s. This is a still frame from a video I was taking when Damsel fired the Warthog; it nicely shows the plume that is visible as the pistol discharges the bullet toward the target. For a petite gun, it sure exhibits a full-blown plume and report. “Baby Boomer” seemed to be an appropriate designation for this little gun.
