According the the Natural Sciences Department at Cal State University Long Beach, this is a translational landslide. Slides like this move pretty slow. This one, in particular, has moved about 600 feet over the past 50 years. The motion is enough, however, to keep the road builders and line painters busy along this stretch of Palos Verdes Drive South. After a few months movement, however, it looks as it does in this shot taken by Damsel last week.
California
New Years Eve
Damsel took me for a drive today to Malaga Cove at the south end of Santa Monica Bay. It was nice enough that we could wear short sleeves and have the top down on her little convertible. We went out and about to get some last-minute items in preparation for our new year’s eve at home.
A Crummy Commercial?
Here’s an unusual photo opportunity – a scenic lighthouse with an island in the background with a seagull flying above – thrown into the mix this time, however, is a crummy commercial.
I think the occupants were there trying to spot migrating whales. Taken today at Point Vicente.
Take a Ride with Me Lucille
. . . in my Daily KOS Mobile.
I believe it’s all there – every conceivable extremist point of view. Where else but in California? The stickers cleverly conceal the fact that the vehicle itself is a piece of s***. In fact, I think the stickers are being used like duct tape to keep the rear end from falling apart.
Red Meat
Even though the weather has been wetter and cooler here over the last couple of weeks, it was nice enough today to barbecue up a couple of beef tenderloin steaks. This delicious meal didn’t take all that much time for us since the sides were left over from a previous meal.
I cooked the steaks on the grill with no seasoning other than olive oil (to keep ’em from sticking to the grill) and some fresh cracked pepper – seven minutes each side on a hot grill.
For the side dishes, we had some mashed potatoes with spinach and braised, chopped Brussels sprouts and bacon bits. As mentioned before, these only had to be nuked in the micro for a couple of minutes.
Damsel and I walked it off afterwards.
Tomorrow, we’re cooking in the crockpot since we’re going to the shooting range. In addition to the time at the range we will be cleaning up the equipment for an hour after we get home. Not enough time to prepare a conventional meal – not to worry though, tomorrow’s recipe is for Hungarian Goulash.
Giant Cactus in Bloom
After our session at the shooting range today, we went to the botanic gardens. While we were there, I took this picture of an interesting cactus in bloom. This cactus is about 30 feet (9m) tall and 30 feet (9m) in diameter. The blossoms are tiny, yellow clusters. I thought the yellow and green cactus contrasted nicely with the blue sky this afternoon.
