Let the Good Times Roll

And roll they did:

A moderate earthquake occurred at 11:42:15 AM (PDT) on Tuesday, July 29, 2008.
The magnitude 5.4 event occurred 4 km (3 miles) WSW of Chino Hills, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 14 km ( 8 miles).

Damsel and I were at home and at work, respectively, as shown by the two red spots in the shake map below. We both felt a jolt and then about 90 seconds of light rolling with another jolt sometime in the middle of the rolling. I needed to get my sea legs when I stood up to look out of the window. Neither of us had any damage or anything tip over. Bear, our Shepard/Lab mix dog hid under Damsel’s desk for a long time after the shaking stopped.

Delay Train

The other day, I posted a picture of a colorful sunrise. In that article, I mentioned the fact that I leave the house early so I can get to work early and come home early. Today it was not to be . . .

delay-train

Note that this is the END of the train as it moved from right to left. There were two locomotives on this end and three on the other end of the train. It took eight minutes for the train to pass at a speed of about 15 MPH.

But, I was only a few minutes later than usual and we’re going to be on vacation next week. After that, there are only 379 calendar days left until my planned retirement date which is only 239 estimated working days to go, but then, who’s counting?

California Leads the Nation

big winner . . . in the cost of fuel, that is – $4.35 per gallon of regular.

On the way to the indoor target range today, I stopped to fill up the truck. The tank was a little dryer for my bi-weekly fill-up because of the trip out to the gun show yesterday. I lost the bet to Damsel that it would take over a hundred bucks to fill the tank – barely.

I blame the asswipes in government that disallow drilling, refining and production of petroleum products domestically.

Holiday Odyssey

Damsel took these pictures today when we were driving on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. We started out just going for a holiday drive, but these targets of opportunity presented themselves for Damsel’s camera. From peacocks to pelicans and Stearman to Boeing, we saw it all today. She imaged more than 500 jpegs with her digital. Very difficult picking four pix let alone one . . .

Red State, Blue State

mapThis is a map of the country from the 2004 presidential election where states carried by Bush are colored red and blue if carried by Kerry. The map of “red states” seems to dominate the country, since they cover far more area than the blue ones. However, this is a little misleading because it fails to take into account the fact that most of the red states have small populations and most of the blue states have large ones. The blue may be small in area, but they are large in terms of numbers of people, which is what matters in an election where the majority wins.

However, the Federalists designed the Electoral College to mitigate domination by states with great population over those without. Constitutional scholars know that this is an important concept the Founders handed down.

fat mapNow, if we were to re-map the country using a cartography technique to distort state boundaries to account for the population of that state, we get a much different picture. Each state now has a hypothetical area in proportion to its population. Regardless of this distorted view, however, the Electoral college selected President Bush for his second term. The actual nationwide popular vote also went to Bush by a plurality of over six million votes.

An interesting observation of the distorted map is that many of the blue states appear bloated and overweight. In real life, it seems, the governments of the ‘bloated’ states are as bloated and overweight as the hypothetical boundaries.

Sadly, California, the most bloated of the re-mapped states, is one where government overtaxes, over-regulates and repeatedly invests public funds in failed government programs, the educational system being the most paramount among them.

Standing Waves

standing-wave.jpgDriving home this afternoon, I saw this cloud formation. It’s an ‘atmospheric wave’ which is formed by the atmosphere rising and falling like ripples in a pond. When the air rises above a threshold, its temperature drops below the point where visible moisture condenses. As it flows downward, it warms again and the moisture evaporates.

This type of formation can occur in the lee side of mountains or ahead of an approaching front under the ‘right’ conditions. This wave is one ahead of a front since there is rain in the forecast later this evening.

Pilots of smaller aircraft are wary of areas where these form since turbulence can be severe to extreme. I can tell you from personal experience as a pilot that it is not much fun trying to keep the wings level in even moderate turbulence.

UPDATE: The forecast was accurate – our chance of rain is now 100% at 7:50PM PDT.
