A Pink Spring Columbine
We went to the home improvement center today to get a few supplies to take Home. While we were in the garden shop I saw these nice pink columbines blooming. Click on the image to enlarge.
A White and Red Amaryllis
I have several gorgeous amaryllis flowers opening this weekend. This one is brilliant red and white. I have another one that is pure red that will be opening very soon. Click on the image to enlarge.
The California Garden
We’re back at Casa Grande* for Easter weekend. When we arrived yesterday, we were surprised at how well the garden was doing with virtually no attention for over a month. The poppies were going crazy with their bright orange flowers and the artichoke had produced these wonderful flower buds, one of which we’re going to steam early next week and eat it for lunch. * We’re now in to referring to the 2700 square foot two story house in California as Casa Grande (Big House) as opposed to the little Arizona home which we now call Casa Bonita (Pretty House).
Roll out the Barrels
In addition to about 15 small cacti we brought from the California home, these two fairly large (and heavy) barrel cacti made the trip (almost*) without incident. The one on the left is a Golden Barrel cactus and on the right is a Devil’s Tongue cactus.
Most of the cacti we brought will go into the ground around the outside of the courtyard since we don’t want to have any cacti with needles and sharp spines inside where the dogs will be allowed to be loose. We have chosen no-thorn shrubs and flowering bushes for that area.
* Unloading the Golden Barrel, Bob scratched the sh*t out of his left inside forearm on its sharp needles. There was no real damage though and no spines were embedded beneath his skin, thank goodness – they can be hard to get out and easily become infected.
We will be putting both of these in the ground which is long overdue for them since they are becoming rootbound in their pots. Our cactus and succulent garden is going to be coming along nicely.
The Beach at Playa Del Rey
I had a dental appointment in Santa Monica today. After we were finished there, we drove back to the house along the coast. The weather looks pretty in this picture, but it’s merely a brief reprise from more stormy weather to come again. The beach is mostly deserted in spite of the sunlight because the temperature was only a balmy 58°s;. Click on the image to enlarge.
California Poppy
When the clouds finally parted after a storm passed through here last night and this morning, there were dozens of poppies in the garden. I took this photo of one that was starting to open. It almost looks like a paper flower. Click on the image to enlarge.
