I am so pleased with my moth orchids this year. There are eight flowers on the stem, but I can only photograph their faces four at a time. Click on the image to enlarge.

We woke up this morning and when we took the dog outside, we saw that this beautiful epiphyllum flower opened to the rays of the morning sun. You can see why I quickly went for my Canon XTi.
It is no coincidence, but the Epiphyllum Society were having their show and sale at the Botanic […]
My moth orchids seem to be even more beautiful this year than the string I got last year. Click on the image to enlarge.

I really don’t know the official name for these tiny orchids, but I have these orange ones, some yellow ones and some purple ones growing on the patio this week. Click on the image to enlarge.

During our visit to the home improvement center today, I saw these beautiful cymbidium orchids in the hothouse. I looked on the internet and found out this variety is probably called “Diane Falk.” I presume they’re named after the developer of this cultivar. Click on the image to enlarge.

Today, we went to the South Bay Orchid Society’s show and sale at the South Coast Botanic Gardens. I took about 128 images of the beautiful orchids but I can’t show them all. It was very difficult to pick the 15 images for this slide show, so these were randomly picked.
This beautiful spotted maroon phalaenopsis (moth) orchid has been dormant on the patio since it bloomed last year, but is now back in all it’s glory. Click image to enlarge.
Known as the “moth orchid” due to its resemblance to some tropical moths, the phalaenopsis is native to the Asiatic tropics, India, Indonesia and the Philippines. I just added this very pretty orchid to the living room where it was catching the afternoon sunshine when I took this photo. Click for a bigger view of […]
This is the latest addition to the living room decor. It’s a miniature ‘Moth Orchid’ or phalaenopsis. The colors range from pinks to yellows to greens with a pattern of tiny maroon stripes and dots. There are three flowers on the stem with more to come. I think it’s very beautiful. Click on the image […]

Otherwise known as “Orchid Cactus,” this epiphyllum flower is of the “Frühlingsgold” (Spring gold) variety. Light yellow inner petals and darker yellow outer petals that started out red. There will be several more on this plant before spring ends. We hope to have some red and white epiphyllum flowers later this spring.

Last week when I was over at my Mom and Dad’s place, I spotted this little hummingbird gathering nectar from Mom’s miniature orchids. He was seemingly unafraid of me when I grabbed the camera and took several shots of him, this one being the best of the lot. Sorry, no larger image since I had […]
