End of Daylight Savings Time in Arizona

Dali Limp Watches

Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings Time probably because the state sees no point in extending the number of evening hours the hot summer sun beats down on the desert. Having the sun go down at eight PM in June and July is better than having it go down at nine.

During DST, Arizona is on Pacific Daylight Time (well, Arizona Time actually) and after DST ends we’re on Mountain Standard Time. The most pronounced effect is that the TV schedules are driven by networks that DO observe DST. So, in the fall, instead of being three hours less than eastern time, we’re only behind by two. All the five o’clock television events now come on at six.

Interestingly, some of Arizona does observe DST – The Navajo Nation overlaps the Utah, Colorado and New Mexico borders so the tribal leadership observes DST. I found this out last May in Page Arizona (within the Navajo reservation) when my GPS was estimating our arrival at the campground according to Navajo time which showed an hour later than the actual time we arrived according to the clock in the truck.

Roadside Native American Petroglyphs

Roadside Native American Petroglyphs

On our trip back from California yesterday, Damsel managed to get this good shot of the Native American Petroglyphs along US 60 between Hope, and Harcuvar, AZ. We have stopped at this location a few times, but this time she took the shot while we were going 55 MPH as we passed the rock pile upon which the ancient artifacts are etched. If you’re interested in seeing this first hand, point your GPS to approximately 33.748822 (N. lat), -113.671906 (E. long). As you can see from her photo, it’s right there.

Arizona Outback

Arizona Outback

We drove back to our Arizona home today. After getting off interstate 10, we are officially in the Arizona Outback. The Outback stretches along US Hwy 60 across La Paz and Maricopa Counties and has some of the most amazing and beautiful scenery seen anywhere. We always find something new each time we cross this magnificent desert. Click on the image to enlarge.

Salomehenge

We crossed the Arizona Outback today on our way back to visit the California house. We are always fascinated with the odds and ends that comprise the Outback. This old building made of stone is near Salome, AZ. We reverently refer to it as “Salomehenge.” Click on the image to enlarge.

Targeted Public Service Commercials

There was a free preview to DirecTV’s “Extra Innings” MLB access channels which we have been taking advantage of over the last few nights. The preview is over now, but we got to see some pretty good games.

Last evening, Damsel and I watched the baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Oakland A’s. The broadcast originated in Oakland, but the sportscasters were with the Yankee organization, so the broadcast and the commercials shown were intended for New York’s fans.

We watched several games, but never saw this TV spot until last night. We’re sure glad that we live in a place where this sort of spot never has to be televised.

Hitched

We hitched up the trailer, not to go on a Fourth of July vacation, but to tow it to the dealer for them to work off a couple of squawks and replace the TV video cable with an HDMI cable. It takes a bit of effort to get the four-point anti-sway hitch ready to tow, so I did the job yesterday in order to be ready to roll this morning.

We took advantage of the trip after dropping the trailer off, to do a little shopping at Wal-Mart, where we bought a TV wall mount for the trailer and took it over to the dealer for them to install. We also stopped at Lowe’s to pick up a custom patio shade we ordered a couple of weeks ago.

Now that the chores are done, it’s time to settle in for a nice Independence Day Holiday! Happy Birthday America!
