What They Didn’t Tell You Today

Not only do conservatives have to filter the BS out of print and broadcast media, but so do firearms enthusiasts and second-amendment rights advocates. And when we’re not filtering, we have to “fill in the gaps” where important news items have been editorially omitted.

Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of the National Rifle Association, determined to bridge the media gap, is now offering an online weblog to bring the views of gun owners and enthusiasts to the fore, as well as exposing those stories that go unreported in the mainstream media.

Doing my part, I now have an animated sidebar widget that takes you to the NRA News site. You can read Wayne LaPierre’s eMail announcement below the fold.

They’re Killing South Park – You Bastards!

The little beach town of Hermosa Beach, on the south Santa Monica Bay in California, is having an image problem with their recreational facility known as “South Park.” The Women’s Club in HB offered to provide a new sign for the park, but tied a name change to the deal. It seems they are offended by the stigma attached to the name itself.

Is it just me or are these do-gooding stiffs just a little too insecure with themselves? I hope that Matt and Trey will offer an episode dedicated to these pinheads.

Sumatra Lilies

Excitingly rich, garnet red blooms with deep ruby brush strokes. Lavish detail continues in the the thin white ruffle at the edge of the petals’ rich ruby freckling. OK — so I didn’t think of those words — they were printed on the florist’s wrapper — but accurate, as you can clearly see.

These aren’t my favorite Stargazer Lilies, but I sure think they’re beautiful.

The Solar Neighborhood Today

There’s a lot of interesting things to see in the sky today – the bad news is they’re all happening in the direction of the Sun and impossible to see without special equipment. The good news, however, is that there are ways to see these events without looking directly at the Sun, which is ill-advised and likely dangerous to your vision.

Sunspot 923 is almost in the center of the Sun today, and can be seen using eclipse shades or making a pinhole camera. Over the weekend Damsel and I saw it when I used a pair of binoculars to image the solar disk on the floor.

Veterans Day 2006

Thank you Veterans for your service, your sacrifices, and your spirit. May God bless you all.

The Lomita, California Veterans of Foreign Wars post flew these brilliant colors all over the property. A large American Flag and the POW flag were on the mast high over the post. We got a nice thrill out of their show of patriotism on this Veterans Day.

Semper Fi

From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli,
We fight our country’s battles in the air, on land and sea.
First to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title of United States Marine.

Our Flag’s unfurled to every breeze from dawn to setting sun.
We have fought in every clime and place, where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far off northern lands and in sunny tropic scenes,
You will find us always on the job, the United States Marines.

Here’s health to you and to our Corps, which we are proud to serve.
In many a strife we’ve fought for life and never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy ever look on heaven’s scenes,
they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.

Happy 231st Birthday to the USMC. God bless all Marines, past present and future!
