Courtyard Progress

new-paint.jpgOur contractor finished painting the courtyard wall today. He would have been done yesterday except the paint sprayer he brought didn’t have enough capacity to spray the thick paint. They finished using a larger unit this morning.

All that remains on the courtyard is to get rocks spread out for the ground cover and an irrigation system installed for the shrubs and trees to come later. We also are planning on getting some custom gates built and installed for the archway and the backyard access.

Steel Security Doors Milestone

The latest planned improvements milestone is now complete: steel security doors. We probably don’t need these doors for security as much as we want the southwestern style and the ability to open the front door, let the air in and keep the bugs out.

I made a composite image of the doors that the installer put in place yesterday. Left to right, the front entrance, patio entrance and the garage entrance. I have to admit that Damsel knocked this one out of the park. Click on the image to enlarge.

Shutter Milestone

Today has been a busy day for us. The shutter guys installed our beautiful new shutters as you can see in the slideshow animation. I took photos inside and outside of the knotted wood and the saguaro ribs details on the great room shutters. The wood in the shutters matches our kitchen and bathroom cabinets very closely. You can stop the slideshow by placing your mouse cursor over the images and rolling out to resume.

We also got a landscaping representative out to assess our ground cover and landscaping needs. We will probably move out on landscaping after the contractor finishes the courtyard wall.

Sunday Dinner

We might be a little short of furnishings and decoration, but we’re not going to scrimp on our cuisine. This is today’s dinner – country style barbecued pork ribs (with Damsel’s killer homemade BBQ sauce), asparagus spears, the all-important beans and coleslaw. I enjoyed a bottle of Samuel Adams Winter Lager and Damsel sipped a glass of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. We ate this sumptuous dinner on the patio table and chairs which are temporarily serving as our dining room furniture. Click on the image to enlarge.

Courtyard Progress Report

The masons showed up today to start on the wall for our courtyard today. They made excellent progress getting most of the blocks in place up to the point where the back gateway and entry arch will be built. Click on the image to enlarge.

Steel Screen Door Milestone

KokopeliYesterday, we ordered the security doors for the house. Since we have Santa Fe style architecture, we’re going with doors that reflect the style. The figure at the bottom of the door is Kokopeli, a Native American icon seen throughout the southwest. The sunset and the symbol in the center of the door are also Native American style.

Damsel and I originally contacted a vendor we found on the internet. We started the process with them but soon realized they weren’t responding to our inquiries about custom colors and styles like they weren’t paying attention or something.

When we made a trip to the Phoenix Metro area for supplies, quite by accident we found another steel screen door vendor in a strip mall. We went in and discovered that not only did they have the exact same doors as the on-line guys, but offered them at less than half the cost we were originally quoted. We arranged for a measurement session with the new guys and called the others to cancel.

Since we’re paying much less for the doors, we decided to get steel doors for the patio and garage door. They should be installed in about four weeks.
