Red Birds Open for Business

Yesterday, I posted a photo of the flower pods on my Red Bird of Paradise. To my surprise, the first three opened up this morning. I don’t have to tell you how much I love these shrubs and I’m ecstatic to have my very own blooms. There will be more coming and I promise (DrJim) I will post them when I can. Arizona Gazanias

I’ve always loved the gazanias that we had in California. Maybe I will bring some of them back to Arizona on our next trip out west. We were at the nursery in town today and saw these in bloom. I wasn’t sure how they would do in this climate, but, as you can see, they are just fine! Click on the image to enlarge.

Red Peanut Cactus Flower

It is just another peaceful Sunday except for this gorgeous 2½ inch peanut cactus flower which opened today. There were two buds, but the critters ate one which prompted me to move the planter. Don’t worry, though, there are more buds coming. Click on the image to enlarge.

Cholla Cactus

I took this photo about a year ago in the back of the lot where our house was to be built in Arizona. Now that the house is complete, this cholla still stands on the little hill in our back yard. It produced an amazing bunch of yellow flowers over the last couple of months. Click on the image to enlarge.

Easter Lily Cactus Flower

This echinopsis (a.k.a hedgehog, sea-urchin or Easter lily cactus) flower opened up during the night. This morning, I got this photo of it where it sits in a pot in front of the Arizona house. This cactus has flowered before, but I don’t remember the flower being this large. I think it likes the desert! Click on the image to enlarge.

A Late Spring Cactus Orchid

I am pleasantly surprised that our frülingsgold epiphyllum produced another flower this late in the season. It might be the climate here versus Southern California, but these usually are done by April out there. I like it! Click on the image to enlarge.
