The Good Assurance of Red Roses

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, writing in the voice of his “greatest detective” character, Sherlock Holmes, presented a tribute to this magnificent natural beauty (read below the photo).

During a brief lull in a criminal investigation (“The Adventure of the Naval Treaty”), Sherlock Holmes took a moment to smell a red rose. The flower, he remarked to his friend Dr, Watson, clearly was evidence of divine beneficence. “Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers,” proclaimed the world’s greatest detective. “All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and colour are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again we have much to hope from the flowers.”

The roses in the photo will assure goodness at our table this weekend.

Orchid of the Week

Last weekend while we were in the orchid hothouse at our local garden shop, I took this picture of a nice yellow and pink phalaenopsis orchid. Hard to choose the best or prettiest, but this was definitely among the nicest.

Sumatra Lilies

Excitingly rich, garnet red blooms with deep ruby brush strokes. Lavish detail continues in the the thin white ruffle at the edge of the petals’ rich ruby freckling. OK — so I didn’t think of those words — they were printed on the florist’s wrapper — but accurate, as you can clearly see.

These aren’t my favorite Stargazer Lilies, but I sure think they’re beautiful.

Iris

These beautiful Iris stems were my table centerpiece last week. Those are gone now, but today I replaced them with new stems and also got some Sumatra Asian lilies — more on those after they bloom.

A White Icelandic Poppy

The sun was greeted by this white Icelandic Poppy this morning in my garden. I just love these since they tolerate the cooler temperatures and provode colors in the garden late into the year.

Even though this is called an Icelandic Poppy, it is, in fact, native to the USA. Read the following short articles for more facts and more pretty pictures about Icelandic Poppies.

By the way, if you’re in a timezone that observes daylight saving time, tonight’s the time to set your clocks back an hour.

Hibiscus

Since we had network problems today, Cap’n Bob was not able to finish his article as planned. So, he asked me to post a flower photo.

There are over 200 varieties of this lovely flower. It is the state flower of Hawaii and the national flower of South Korea. This golden hibiscus was growing in a pot at a nearby home improvement center.
