This week, I’m going through some of the photos we took on our recent vacation. This one, taken at Canyon de Chelly, is of an ancient Native American settlement built into the sandstone walls of this picturesque canyon. This one is referred to as Yucca Cave Ruin. The early settlers built these dwellings around nine to seven hundred years ago. The canyons have been occupied by natives for over two-thousand years. These canyons are in the Navajo Nation near Chinle, AZ. Click for full-sized panorama.

Montezuma’s Castle
This is not a castle and nobody named Montezuma ever lived there. Regardless, this ruin built and inhabited by the ancient Sinagua, is an interesting place to visit near Camp Verde, AZ

Happy Face Fireworks
“It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
— John Adams to Abigail Adams, Philadelphia July 3rd. 1776
While watching the fireworks display at a nearby park last evening, we witnessed a lot of great effects, including a happy face. Check it out in the video.
I got curious about what effects there were out there and so I looked in WikiPedia for some answers. I was amazed at the many types of effects applied to modern fireworks displays. Among the many effects there is the ring effect; the happy face is a derivative of the ring.
I also found the quotation from John Adams at the top of the WikiPedia article.
Our Day at the Gun Show
This morning we took off for the gun show. We haven’t been for almost six months, and had a list of things we needed to get. Well, we scored everything on the list and then some. At the left is a montage of three items that we brought home with us today.
The first panel is a close-up of some .38 special factory reloads that we got – 500 rounds at a reasonable price. They didn’t have any 158 grain .357 reloads, so we settled for the .38 rounds – they’re only going to be used for target practice anyway.
In the next panel, something not on the list – a nice T-shirt with a warm and fuzzy message. Damsel really needed that, so we got it. They had a lot of funny and interesting T-shirts, including one that had a picture of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle and a caption that said “You never see a motorcycle parked outside of a psychiatrist’s office.” If I were still riding, I might have picked that one up.
On the bottom is sort of an experiment. Damsel’s Para Warthog is a bit finicky sometimes about the ammo we use – it likes new ammo better than reloads. So, we bought 500 rounds of Wolf, which is Russian-made .45 ACP ammo. I guess we’ll see how well a Canadian Pistol works with Russian cartridges. My Glock 30 doesn’t seem to care, so we bought 500 rounds of reloaded .45 ACP ammo for it.
One gentleman standing next to us at the ammo concession bought 500 rounds of .38 special wadcutters – he was complaining about how his home town had an ordinance that restricts purchases of ammo to a mere 50 rounds per month. He is from – none other than – San Francisco. Poor guy has to come 400 miles to purchase wadcutters – mostly ineffective as anything other than target rounds. The asswipes that run ‘Frisco have no clues, I guess.
It was lots of fun going to the show today. We’re looking forward to the next one in August.
Walking the Dog
She doesn’t get to do this very often, but yesterday, we took ‘Bear’ for a drive to several stops on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. She enjoyed exploring the Neptune Fountain at the Palos Verdes Estates civic center, the Point Vicente Interpretive Center (shown in the picture) and a couple of other stops on the peninsula.
I think she was happy, but it must have tired her out – all that doggie exploration – because she slept most of the morning today.
Wayfarer’s Chapel
We’ve blogged about this place before. The son of Frank Lloyd Wright, Lloyd Wright, designed this unique chapel. Located just west of Portuguese Bend, the Chapel has been in continuous operation for many years on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
This is a picture of Catalina Island taken from an area just behind the chapel. We couldn’t go into the chapel while we were there today since there was a wedding in progress. What a great day to get married in this beautiful setting!
Today was an extraordinary day. Temperatures were near 90° F. and the skies were clear. We drove most of the way around Palos Verdes Peninsula before finally returning home for BBQ. It was also Armed Forces Day. We will be posting on that tomorrow sometime.

California Poppy Day
Yesterday, April 6th, was California Poppy Day. I have many poppies like this one now showing in the back yard. I sure do love spring and the flowers that come with it.
