Ninth Blogiversary on Autumnal Equinox 2014

Equinox 2014

It seems like it has been longer, but today, which coincides with the Autumnal Equinox, is the ninth anniversary of the CB&D blog. Since we had our own internet service provider and domain/website, we skipped the Blogger/Blogspot routine and went for a self-hosted weblog using a somewhat inferior publishing platform, the name of which I forget, and upgraded to WordPress® shortly afterwards. Some of the very early posts were lost in the process of upgrading, but the ones we managed to recover are still in the database on the ISP’s server. This post marks the 6326th blog entry into the WordPress database. That is a lot of hot air!

To us, the weblog has been a way to archive our activities and to log events as they take place. Sort of like an on-line diary, if you will. Every once in a while, I will dig back into the archives to try and locate something we knew happened in the past and usually can find what I’m seeking with the platform’s built-in search engine.

We may not post as often as we did in the past (life has its complications), nor do we post as politically as in the past, but we plan to continue using the weblog as a journal of events, a repository for a few of the Damsel’s photos and whatever whim suits us. We’re independent of social media (Bookface, Twatter, etc.), so there won’t be any repression of our thoughts unless the First Amendment is repealed – which this administration is rapidly seeking to do.

We should be here for a while . . .

Caught in the Spam Trap

spamtrap.pngI sometimes just have to laugh at some of the weird sh!t that gets caught in the spam trap here. We have been using a no-longer-supported plug-in called Spam Karma. Regardless of the non-support, it still does a real good job of eliminating an estimated 99.9 percent of spam comments.

The plug-in can be set to email some of the lower-score items to the webmaster. As I said in the first paragraph, some of them can be pretty funny, especially if the spammer is using his whatever-to-English translation software. This one came into the other blog this morning:

I discovered your blog webpage on google and check some of your early posts. Continue to maintain up the extremely beneficial operate. I just additional up your RSS feed to my MSN News Reader. Searching for forward to reading alot more from you later on!

(redacted vendor they were pushing)

Spam Karma 2 Report:

A New Camera

New CameraDue to an unfortunate mishap last week, my Canon EOS Rebel camera stopped performing correctly. Apparently, the camera fell from the sofa table onto the tile floor when one of the dogs (I assume) caught the camera strap that was hanging over the edge of the table. Despite the rubber camera armor, the lens hit the floor hard enough that it got jammed.

In addition to the lens jam, the autofocus would not work correctly with either of my other lenses. So, we ordered a new replacement camera, an EOS Rebel T3/1100D, a later version of the old EOS Rebel XSi/400D.

I took a few pictures with the new camera this afternoon and it seems to be working well. I will have to learn some of the new features on this camera since the upgrade included things that I do not yet know how to use. Expect to see some good photos over the next few days as more and more cactus flowers are blooming.

ISP Maintenance Scheduled

jackhammer.pngOur internet service provider has notified us that there may be intermittent outages in our MySQL access over the weekend. Please tune back in after it’s over. Thanks.

The weekend of February 16th and 17th Omnis Network will be performing deep cleaning of the equipment in our data center. The cleaning may require the halting of some services such as POP/IMAP Email or MySQL database for up to one hour while the physical server is thoroughly cleaned.
