Desert Flowers – Flashback to Spring Enjoy this slideshow of Damsel’s photos of flowers taken last spring. The weather here is sort of gloomy with the forecast pointing to more rain today and tonight. I thought a few spring flowers would cheer us up. 😀 Share 13 Dec 2011 by CapnBob Arizona Environment Photography
Where did you get the cactus with the pale flowers that have the bright purple stigmas? That looks like a native Echinomastus species, possibly Echinomastus erectocentrus.
Argentine Giant Cactus, Echinopsis candicans, according to the guys at Squash Blossom Nursery where we bought it here in Wickenburg.
Interesting. I didn’t think there were other cacti that have that kind of pale flower with the brightly colored stigma.
Damsel pointed out that I misunderstood the bright purple stigma question. We’re not sure what this one is. We bought it at a succulent show in Torrance, CA.
This is the one you meant – right?
Yes, this is the one I meant. The bright purple stigma in a pale flower is a trademark of the genus Echinomastus, although E. johnsonii can have bright pink flowers, or in one variety, greenish flowers. Echinomastus has several species, not all of which are native to the U.S. Since you bought this at a show in Torrance, it could be a non-native species. Whatever it is, it’s a real pretty cactus.
