I just planted my first Amaryllis bulb. In doing some reading up on their care, I found that if you store them in the refrigerator for the winter (as is commonly suggested) you need to make sure that you don’t put apples in there with them. Seems the apples give off some sort of gas that will make Amaryllis bulbs sterile.
Now, isn’t that bizarre?
Very nice.
That is pretty bizarre about the apples.
My amaryllis bulbs spend the winter in a cool shady spot but not in the refrigerator. They seem to be happy with that.
Glad you like the pics Glenn.
What I want to know is…. who figured out the apple connection? Did some guy wonder why all his bulbs failed to grow while his neighbors all came up? Gets to thinking that maybe the fact he had some apples in his fridge a couple of months ago might have done it?
I just got my first Amaryllis bulb a few weeks ago and read that same thing about the apples.
I found this on a Q and A page I found at North Dakota State called Hortiscope:
No clue about how it was discovered.
