Euphorbia and Bee

Yesterday, we attended a bonsai show and sale at the South Coast Botanic Garden. Naturally, after viewing the exhibits at the show, we took our usual stroll through the gardens. We always enjoy the cactus and succulent garden, but it is especially nice this time of year when many varieties are in bloom.

I paused at this South African Euphorbia ledienii to photograph the tiny yellow flowers covering the crown. Just as I did so, a honey bee decided to sample some of the succulent nectar from the tiny yellow buds. Click on the image to enlarge.

Treasure Flower

GazaniaThis is Gazania, or ‘Treasure Flower.’ Gazania is a South African perennial that looks similar to a daisy, but in bold, brilliant yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, cream and even a beautiful mauve and a burgundy color. It’s a plant that is perfect for window boxes or any hot, dry and sunny spot.

Gazania grows well in rock gardens or in hot, dry areas. Good soil gives best growth but the plant tolerates poor, sandy soil. Gazania requires less water than most annuals. Full sun is preferred and the flowers do not open on wet or cloudy days.

This one was open on the patio this morning just after I watered. Click the image above for the big picture.

Mini Moth

This is the latest addition to the living room decor. It’s a miniature ‘Moth Orchid’ or phalaenopsis. The colors range from pinks to yellows to greens with a pattern of tiny maroon stripes and dots. There are three flowers on the stem with more to come. I think it’s very beautiful. Click on the image to enlarge.

Spring Succulents

If you read this weblog, then you know how much I love spring. It’s the time of the year when flowers are seemingly everywhere and my SLR camera is seemingly busier than usual. Today, this ‘Peanut Cactus’ was the perfect succulent subject for the camera with its seemingly too red flowers.

A Pink Daisy

Some of the flowers in the bouquet we brought home last weekend are still beautiful. The bouquet was prepared with a pink and purple color theme. This is a subtle pink compared to the hot pink from another flower from the same bouquet. There was also a purple rose, but it wilted a day or two ago. Click on the image to enlarge.

Red and White Amaryllis

This amaryllis opened up over the weekend. I got this shot this afternoon in between doing loads of laundry and reading the blogs. Busy busy busy. Click image to enlarge.
