Morning Glory

I have been visiting a lot lately at my Mom and Dad’s place to help out with Dad, who is convalescing from his illness. Mom can use the help. While I’m there, I take my camera into her garden and get some images of her beautiful flowers and cactii. This morning glory is one of the many colors in her garden.

The Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale

very pink flowersSaturday, we attended the Cactus Show at the South Coast Botanic Garden. We also took a walk into the main gardens, but more on that in another post.

I have always loved succulents and find them fascinating – so many varieties, sizes and colors. I always manage to pick up a new succulent and bring it home from the sale. This is one of four new succulents in 3-inch pots that made their way to our patio. It’s called ‘Neoporteria senilis’ or ‘Eriosyce senilis’ but I couldn’t find a common name for it on the internet. All I know is that the flowers are going to be bright pink when they bloom.

I’ll post another photo with the blooms when they open. Click the picture to see full sized.

Yellow Gerberas

Our visit to the flower concession at the supermarket yielded a bouquet of these pretty yellow Gerbera daisies. They will occupy the centerpiece on the dining room table this week. Click image for wallpaper-sized photo.

Pink Tulips

We didn’t get out to the range for our weekly target practice session. Instead, we elected to spend the day relaxing and enjoying the spring weather – after some badly needed yard work, that is.

Friday, I got these beautiful pink tulips at the flower concession in the supermarket. Not exactly gun pr0n, but real purdy. Click the image for big.

Our First Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera Daisy The first of our Gerbera Daisies opened this week. These are red, but Gerberas can come in a variety of colors like white, pink, yellow and orange. The center of the flower is sometimes black. Often the same flower can have petals of several different colors. They get their name from the German naturalist Traugott Gerber.

Gerbera is also an important commercial flower. It is the fifth most used cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip). It has approximately 30 species in the wild, extending to South America, Africa and tropical Asia.

There are several more buds ready to open on this plant. I just love springtime!

A Colorful Ranunculus

A few weeks ago, I bought some ranunculus for the planters on the front porch. This one was particularly beautiful in the morning sun. Click for larger image.
