Second Spring Our landscaper recently referred to October as being the “second spring.” You can see that this compass cactus agrees with him. Click on the image to enlarge. Share 09 Oct 2011 by Damsel Arizona Flowers Photography
I suspect that, with the orange flowers, this is Ferocactus wislizenii, the Arizona Fishhook Barrel, though it is sometimes referrred to as “compass barrel”, too. The other common barrel, Ferocactus cylindraceus, usually flowers in the spring, almost always with yellow flowers. It is more commonly called “Compass Barrel” than F. wislizenii, and is also called “California Barrel”, as that one is really common out here.
BTW, no matter what it’s called, it is beautiful!
It is a compass barrel. Blooming in the second spring. I’ve even seen Saguaros with blooms on them. It is beeyootiful.
