This brightly colored flower grows on three shrubs in our courtyard. The shrub, red bird of paradise, a.k.a. pride of Barbados, will produce these pretty flowers all summer long. Come November, we will prune these back to just a foot or so while they go dormant until next spring when they will bounce back with twice as many flowers.
Anyone who has read our blog for a while will know that these flowers are my favorites. Click on the image to enlarge.
If I took one of those red berries and stuck it in the ground in Alabama would it grow?
Meanwhile I’m going to check around our local nurseries to see if they’re available…
Thanks for sharing!

Just recently I saw it in Florida, Norm, so it should grow in Alabama. But the red “berry” is an unopened flower, not the fruit. This plant has a bean-like pod, with hard-shelled, brown seeds inside.
Crotalus is right. That berry is an unopened flower. We tried one of these long time ago, bought it in Palm Springs. It did not like the coast. But I have them now.
