I am guessing they call it Devil’s Tongue because the spines look so much like a pointed tongue – enough to be creepy.

I’m guessing because it catches your clothes, finger, hands, anything and makes it HELL to get loose. They are lethal.

Yep, Glenn, the name refers to that broad (like a tongue), sharp (like the Devil) central spine. So does “latispinus” in the scientific name, Ferocactus latispinus.
I’ve got too close to it and it sure stings! There will be blood. But thats why you can’t hug cacti!
