Devil’s Tongue Cactus Flower Our devil’s tongue barrel cactus appears to be happy with its new home in the Arizona desert. This flower opened up today out on the “west 40” part of our half-acre lot. I am guessing they call it Devil’s Tongue because the spines look so much like a pointed tongue – enough to be creepy.
Nice to see things are moving along in your new home.
All the best,

I’m guessing because it catches your clothes, finger, hands, anything and makes it HELL to get loose. They are lethal.
Thanks Glenn! You spent time here, you know ya wanna move here too.
Yep, Glenn, the name refers to that broad (like a tongue), sharp (like the Devil) central spine. So does “latispinus” in the scientific name, Ferocactus latispinus.
I’ve got too close to it and it sure stings! There will be blood. But thats why you can’t hug cacti!
