I brought this cactus from California just after we moved here over three years ago. I don’t know the name of this variety of cactus, but it has long arms that hang over the side of the pot. This is the first and only flower that opened up on this unusual cactus since it’s been here in Arizona. Click on the image to enlarge.
UPDATE: You can see more of this strange cactus here.
Well, darn! Ya stumped me! I would have said it was Disocactus flagelliformis (Rat Tail Cactus), but the flower isn’t right.
Its the first flower we have gotten on this cactus. Tell you the truth we cant remember where we got/bought it. Here or Cali. All the pictures on the internet show it as a hanging cactus weird.
I found a reference to X Heliaporus smithii on a website in the UK. Also called Hybrid rat’s tail cactus, Aporocactus mallisonii, Aporocactus x mallisonii, Disocactus ‘Smithii’, Cereus smithii, Cereus mallisonii, Aporoheliocereus smithii. It has similar red flowers, but their image isn’t clear enough for me to get an exact match.
That being said, I think it’s safe to call the one on the patio a hybrid rat tail cactus.
Works for me, Cap’n. Now I learned a new cactus.:-)
