We have seen cell phone transmission that have been disguised as conifers, palm trees and who knows what else, but this is the first time we have seen a church steeple (or whatever) with cell elements strewn on it. Seen on I-57 near Fullerton, CA. Click on the image to enlarge.
The reverend that married us saved her church from bankruptcy by allowing Verizon to build a cell tower inside a new steeple. It was amazing work, and it still looks like it used to, but about 15′ taller. They had an architect study the building, and design a new steeple and supporting structure to house the cell antennas.
I never knew it was there until she told me! I was helping them with some PC problems, and two Techs from Verizon showed up to do some maintenance on their equipment. When I asked her if they had a switching center on site, she told me the story, and then took me up there where the Verizon guys showed me the whole installation. They had an OC-3 line feeding the site, along with battery back up and a backup generator fired by natural gas. A really amazing installation.
Wow! That sounds like a lot of infrastructure to support the network. Interesting!
It’s a mjor node in their cell network. The church is maybe a mile from one of the main Verizon Central Offices in SoCal. I’ve been by it, and it looks as locked-down as Fort Knox!
I guess it would have to be locked down out there in some of the ‘questionable’ areas.
Yeah, and this NOC is in North Long Beach, NOT one of the better parts of Long Beach!
Just a few miles up the road, and on the other side of the 710/L.A. River is Compton, if you get my drift.
