When we were getting our landscape irrigation installed, the crew dug up a small fishhook barrel cactus. One of the guys asked if I wanted to plant it somewhere else, so I put it into a six inch pot to allow it to grow enough for transplanting into the cactus garden. Unexpectedly, today the tiny fishhook has this beautiful pink flower. Click on the image to enlarge.
Oho! Mammillaria tetrancistra, the corky-seeded fishhook pincushion! Well done, Damsel!
That’s a nearly full-sized specimen, so it might be better to keep it in a pot to enjoy up close. Use well-drained soil, (the native soil should be fine) and allow to dry well between waterings, say, once a week. Morning sun, afternoon shade or filtered sun, and it should do fine. But if you just planted it, do not give water until the roots have had a chance to dry and callus over. Otherwise, it can rot very easily. Remember, this one IS a desert cactus. Good luck!
Thanks Crotalus. We love the native cactus. And the bunnies and ground critters love the California ones we brought (eyeroll).
“Bunnies and ground critters”, eh? See why you need us rattlesnakes?
Well ours must be lazy, cuz there’s lotsa critters. Feasting on our newbie cacti. Succulents.
