We had to run a couple of errands this morning, so we stopped at our new house while we were out. I climbed the little hill behind the house to have a look around. While I was up there, I took a series of images of the neighborhood, panoramic style to stitch into the panoramic image below. The new house is just to the right of center. Ah, the sweet joy of moving OUT of Kaliforniastan!
What did the roof wind up being? Kinda-sorta looks like what my buddy Mike Da Roofer would call “Rolled Roofing”, which is like one huge shingle that comes in rolls.
It’s actually a foam coating. The roofer has a ‘renewal’ arrangement with us to come out every five years and re-coat the surface for essentially a lifetime guarantee.
Yes we are enjoying our freedom in a free state this Christmas. Last night a javelina confronted the Damsel while she was walking one of the dogs. She would have been ready to fend it off with the .38 special she was carrying if the critter hadn’t turned tail.
Huh….don’t think I’ve ever heard of a “foam coat” before.
Is it OK to walk on?
I am guessing that the answer is yes. I will ask our contractor to know for sure.
Foam coating is used under asphalt and on “kool deck” around swimming pools. It’s good enough to drive and walk over.
I’ve seen something similar on commercial roofs during my antenna installing days, and I remembered it was a pain to work with because you couldn’t just “drill a hole” and mount a weather proof roof penetration on it. It required us to get the roofing contractor back out so they could peel it back, we could do our work, and then they’d *properly* seal it back up.
I doubt if you have that worry, though!
I remember it being kind of ‘spongy’ to walk on, and you were supposed to wear shoes with smooth bottoms, almost like boating shoes.
I spoke with the contractor today and he assured me I can walk on the roof if need be. No mention of special shoes and he says the surface is hard. If I ever put up a set of ham radio antlers, they will be on a ground-based tower, so I doubt if I need to get on the roof.
Cool…..I guess a lot has changed since the time I had to deal with that stuff.
