Damsel and I never get tired of seeing the Grand Canyon. December of 2008 was the first time we went there together in the winter to enjoy the same views accentuated with a touch of snow. The first time I “saw” the Grand Canyon was from about 35,000′ on my way out to Kalifornia from Chicago with a bunch of my buddies. We were coming out to see the Long Beach Grand Prix and enjoy the February Kalifornia weather. I think it took about 30 minutes to fly over it on the flight path we were on. The next day “How The West Was Won” was on on of the TV channels out here, and I was struck by the fact that they said it took four months to get from St. Joe Missouri to San Francisco. I’d just come about the same distance in four HOURS.
I still enjoy looking down on the Grand Canyon when I fly over it.
Before it became a restricted area, I flew through the canyon in a PA-18 Super Cub coming back from visiting a friend in Pagosa Springs, CO. It was a clear, beautiful day without the usual turbulence in the canyon. It was a hoot to fly nap of the Earth over the north rim and see the world suddenly drop away.
