I took this photo yesterday of an eighteen-wheeler transporting what appears to be an Armored Personnel Carrier. The truck was northwest bound on US 60 in the general direction of Nevada (?). Perhaps this load is destined for one of the areas up there where war games are played. We saw the vehicle as we were pulling our new travel trailer home.
M113, I believe….
I got a ride from my hotel to the airport in one of those the night I left Tehran in 1978.
WOW! 1978 was a bad time to be in Iran. Glad you made it back.
So am I…..
I left about two weeks before the Shah did. Things were pretty spooky my last might there. The power keep going off in the hotel (Hotel Semiramis, on Roosevelt Street), I could hear what sounded like thousands of people chanting something in the distance, and sporadic gunfire some blocks away.
I went down into the lobby to get a soda from the desk clerk, and I saw these two obviously American guys in the lobby. They heard me speak to the desk clerk, and came over and asked me how I was getting to the airport the next morning. Not thinking anything about why they assumed (knew?) I was headed to the airport, I told them I had an early wake-up call, and they desk clerk had promised there’d be a taxi there to take me.
Some “taxi”. eh?
Scarey times. Shoulda never gone over there again, the area or continent.
