Last night, we stayed fairly close to home in the Mojave Desert, at a little town called California City. It was just another small, but nice campground, away from the ‘burbs. We went through some of the photos from this trip while we were relaxing on our last night out, and decided that we would always remember the frosty trip to the Grand Canyon as a highlight of our winter ’08 vacation.

California City…my, my
Back in 1976 my daughter went to school in California City. It was a special school for the hearing impaired…we had no such facilities at Edwards AFB.
The one sad memory of those years was the untimely death of my daughter’s driver. She was probably in her mid to late sixties and drove special ed children to school as a source of part-time income. The untimeliness of the ordeal was she was hit head-on by a drunk driver on the road to Bakersfield (Rte 58 as I re-call). The drunk is surely out of prison by now and all we have left of Terri’s (my daughter) driver is memories. Between drop-off and pick-up at the school, Terri’s driver would spend the day at our home on Edwards AFB talking and having coffee or tea with my wife…’nough said
Other than that, Califrnia City is OK!
That’s too bad about your friend, Norm.
We stayed there just a night and we crossed SR 58 on our way southbound on SR 14 headed for LA.
California City had clear air and a view of the mountains and desert. High overhead, just as we were about to pull out, we saw a military jet doing some maneuvers overhead. Probably from Edwards or maybe from China Lake.
Back in town, the haze was terrible and made us wish we could stay out in the desert for another week or two.
When I was a wee tyke we lived in a trailor park in 29 Palms and then San Bernadino. All told I think we were in CA for about 7 months. I kinda remember bits and pieces of it as I was only 4 yo. I remember an earthquake, some friends of my mother, my tricyle and parts of the train ride back to NYC.
My Army girl is now in Monterey – or will be there shortly as we just put her back on the plane this morning.
Truly lovely shot! I love the snow and how it sort of looks like powdered sugar on the sides of the canyon.
Thanks, Goddess. Damsel took a lot of other great shots and will post some of them soon.
