{"id":3448,"date":"2010-04-21T15:23:53","date_gmt":"2010-04-21T22:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/capnbob.us\/blog\/2010\/04\/21\/first-light-for-the-solar-dynamics-observatory\/"},"modified":"2010-04-21T15:23:53","modified_gmt":"2010-04-21T22:23:53","slug":"first-light-for-the-solar-dynamics-observatory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/capnbob.us\/blog\/2010\/04\/21\/first-light-for-the-solar-dynamics-observatory\/","title":{"rendered":"First Light for the Solar Dynamics Observatory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These images are just astounding . . .<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href='http:\/\/capnbob.us\/graphics\/imageview.php?image=http:\/\/capnbob.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/prom.jpg' title='prom.jpg'><img src='http:\/\/capnbob.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/prom.thumbnail.jpg' alt='prom.jpg' class='right' \/><\/a>April 21, 2010: Warning, the images you are about to see could take your breath away.<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference today in Washington DC, researchers unveiled &#8220;First Light&#8221; images from NASA&#8217;s Solar Dynamics Observatory, a space telescope designed to study the sun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;SDO is working beautifully,&#8221; reports project scientist Dean Pesnell of the Goddard Space Flight Center. &#8220;This is even better than we could have dreamed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Launched on February 11th from Cape Canaveral, the observatory has spent the past two months moving into a geosynchronous orbit and activating its instruments.
