I believe the rifling created a spriling effect as the projectile left the barrel.
After five test shots at varing distances with the pistol firmly secured in a wood block mount, I couldn't believe that I was missing the target with some of the rounds.  As I cranked the target closer at 5 foot intervals I discovered that the pattern was always circular...and the circle got smaller the closer the target...

I was just being faceitious about the seven yards...just echoed your comment.  The actual
distance (and I'm trying to remember) was about 10 or 15 yards to get a fair pattern around the bulls-eye.  Heck that was thirty plus years ago!</description>
