The hammer is down, and the chambers on either side of the hammer are empty. So even if there is a single shot in the revolver, it is now under the hammer or in the bottom chambers, and there fore the gun isn't going off on the next hammer fall. Since he already apaprently shot a number of rounds, being either 5 or 6, I would have to guess it was 6 and be pretty confident about it.
