DJ,

My article was supposed to convey our disappointment with the attitudes in Hollywood and our general belief that "movies ain't what they used to be."

I suppose I was being a little satirical in the style in which this was written, but I stand by my belief that the Academy has outlived it's usefulness since the old days. We have a libertarian attitude about alternate lifestyles, but we also believe in family values, particularly in public and the entertainment our kids see. Both Damsel and I are quite close to this since we each have siblings who have chosen alternative lifestyles - they are family and we love them.

I wonder if you saw Oliver North's War stories program on Fox News last Sunday? He had a terrific lineup of old timers (Cliff Robertson, Tony Curtis) telling their stories about how Hollywood got behind the war effort during World War II. Today's Hollywood is a far cry from those brave, patriotic folks back then. Many of their movies today seem to sympathize with our enemies rather than supporting our position in the war on terror.

Since when does middle America have any say in the academy awards. It’s supposed to be given to the best film based on its merits and not by public opinion and not on whether you or anyone else thinks about its political or social value.

Personally, I was hoping Brokeback Mountain would win. However, I did see them all and I thought Capote was the best. Crash was a distant third and only won because it was a racially inspired movie.

You made your choices quite evident in the description of the Film titles. However, just because you don’t like the content of the films doesn’t mean that other felt that the films deserved to win.
